I have a family member in Afghanistan that is in the Army. I'm trying to find out what to put in it. Looking for suggestions on items and other tips for shipping to Afghanistan. Thanks!

There always seemed to be tons of candy around, so I would stay away from that if you can. Good beef jerky was always appreciated. Also, flavor packets for bottled water come in handy.

Things that are specific to home are great. Julio's corn chips always went over very well.

it really depends on where he is. Do you know if he's at Kandahar, Bagram, or out at some FOB?

The bigger bases have good px's, so then the necessities aren't to hard to come by, so go with beef jerky, magazines, any local product you know he likes, etc.

if hes stuck out on a fob, then toiletries can be hard to come by.

Going off my deployments, I always enjoyed books, magazines, Copenhagen from the USofA, current pictures of family members (since my daughter grew like a weed during both my trips to Iraq), snacks that were hard to comeby at the PX, like Twinkies and such, and anything that just made it seem more "homely".

This and anything home made. It's the cool season so stuff doesn't tend to melt.

I have heard there are issues in sending tobacco. Anyone have any more insight?

No issues mailing tobacco from person to person.

There are laws preventing companies from giving away free tobacco to anybody, not just military.

I agree with the Ags who suggested sending beef jerky and movies. My wife just sent me an Aggie hoodie to wear for the game. Almost as good as the hoodie, was the large bottle of fudge-covered animal cookies. Since the cookies are a great source of calcium, as the bottle says, I try to eat as many as possible throughout the day.

For Winter...slippers, a twin-size thin down comforter. Cigars. Mobile tea making set. All he needs is hot water.

that being said, if you send beef jerky, send good stuff, not generic jack links or something.
