The Texas Air National Guard has slots available for combat weather officers in Fort Worth. Requirements include being in top physical condition, background in meteorology, and male. Combat Weather?? I'm seriously not trying to be an ass here but aren't they kinda exclusive of each other? Like an oxymoron. I'm actually serious. Does it just mean you are attached to frontline units or something? I was a jarhead so I'm pretty ignorant of army MOS's

Sounds like you might be a little ignorant about the Texas AIR National Guard, too.

I have a Wx team 10 feet from my desk for a reason. They are a VITAL portion of our combat operations that take place all over the AO. Our ground guys need them as much as our air dudes to plan and execute missions.

OK, maybe not need as much...but we used them in conjunction with our supported ground units for every mission.

I was in Combat Weather in Vietnam. We integrated well with the Army. The 1st Cav, at the time was a new concept in battle and our deployment with the forward units was instrumental in tactical planning, especially due to the local weather effects in Vietnam A0. It was a learning experience for us all. The Army and our weather team.

The combat weather guys have to be qualified to jump in with air field assault elements and work with the air field operations teams to get a remote air traffic control operation up and running to bring in follow on units who are could be coming in on C-17's.

I'm sure the Rangers can comment in more detail if they want to, that's one of their bread and butter jobs.

I went through jump school with an Air Force guy who was security forces and worked air field seizure so I picked his brain for three weeks waiting around on bad amusement park rides.

I'll accept the fact that you are not trying to be an ass, but you couldn't be more wrong.

The AF is responsible for wx support to the the Army, as Canyon and Fly Army have noted.

There are also Navy and Marine wx weenies (Aerologists as BigJim pointed out), but I don't know if jarheads have "combat" wx weenies.

As a retired AF wx weenie (not a combat wx weenie), I can attest that they do indeed exist.

They have to go through a hell of a lot of rigorous "combat related" training to qualify for the position.

Oxymoron? Not hardly.

These guys are required to attend many of the same training courses as the PJ's and TACP's in the Air Force due to being attached to special ops groups in the field. Its very difficult to fill the officer billets unless they promote from the enlisted side. Its hard to find a college graduate with a weather background and the physical strength required. Thats what makes A&M an ideal recruiting location.
