the flight of the buzzard @ Duncan Dining Hall or Sbisa? It too was "outlawed" by my day, but resurfaced in spurts between 1972--1975.

My fish old lady was the 'buzzard' our year...and the buzzard flew in Duncan one time. What a hoot!

Got a little story for you ags... Think it was fall of '72 in Duncan, could have been spring '73 though. White belts were gassing off and talk eventually turned to the mythical Flight of the Buzzard, who had the stones to order it, what fish would be the Buzzard, and who would be the target. By the '70's this was an outlawed 'tradition' and therefore a rammable offense. Is 'rammable' a word?

Don't remember which whitebelt ordered the mission, but in our outfit it was a senior privilege to order the flight and a fish privilege to carry it out. My fish old lady got the nod (names will remain classified to protect the guilty) and we (as a fish class in F2) were all schooled in what it meant and how to perform this senior detail.

The buzzard crammed his mouth full of ketchup, mustard, mayo, and other delights until it was drooling down his mouth. Hard to keep the mouth closed when you are laughing your azz off, and then the buzzard "took off" on the flight. In a very slow motion, the buzzard flapped his wings and circled...looking for the prey. By now most of Duncan knew what was happening and most zips were standing on their chairs looking to see who was going to get it...or worried it might be them based on the outfit sending the buzzard.

The buzzard made a few mock attempts at settling on a prey but kept circling in an ever wider manner. I don't remember who the mandated target was, but doubt our buzzard hit that target...most likely a target of his own choosing since once he was committed and ballistic, it was hard to call him back.

Now zips all over Duncan were running for the doors to get away, but plenty stayed to see and take their chances. When the buzzard finally settled on a victim (I swear I don't remeber who), the circling turned tighter and then the telltail short, choppy wing motion with the buzzard's arms was evident for the 'landing' of the buzzard. Before the victim could get away, the buzzard 'puked' his load up on the deserving whitebelt. The roar in Duncan was deafening, mostly from zips thankful it was not them.

We got senior privileges and then that ax fell...but who cares.

THAT'S IT! That's the one I remember! I think it was someone in F2, Fighting Fox Company that order a fish to do it!

It happened several times a year during our tenure...MAN! You really had to pies someone off to get the buzzard and his hunting companion set upon you! Unfortunately, nearby fish who weren't excused from their table were often recipients of collateral damage! If memory serves me right, that fireball concoction was referred to as MUNG.

It happened once or twice while I was there, but never to the extent of RedPot's story. The circling was always limited to our outfit's tables. Never the less, it still drew a lot of attention and got applause from half of Duncan.

Just another tradition from my Old Army days that my two cadets tell me would get them, at the very least, a "vacation" from the Corps for at least a semester....

The buzzard flew fairly frequently in my day, especially in the spring when the whitebelts were getting more than a little bored. Ear greasings and bib burnings went up too....

Had to have fish matches in order to light a 'bib' on fire under the table. Wonder if fish still are required to carry them. Maybe a current cadet can post and let us know.

I believe a fish stood and yelled, "After a X year absence, F-2, fighting fox company proudly brings back the Flight of the Buzzard!"

It took a long hiatus. I do believe the previous poster was right when they said it was rammable!

NJ75...

Pretty sure it resulted in sitting a weekend for the instigator. That is one reason it was a 'moon man' or maybe a two button zip that ordered the strike. In our outfit, they didn't have as much to do on weekends other than hang around and bother the pissheads mostly. Pretty sure the fish had senior privileges that weekend and we played 42 with our zip-buddy while he sat the weekend.

We did have one of the fish stand up and announce the Flight of the Buzzard...name withheld, and there was no flights in the prior year at least, maybe two that we were told. Kind of a special treat to start it back up and then see the reaction in Duncan.

We use chewed up food now, since it's hard to find ketchup & mustard in Duncan. But I sent a fish with a mouthful the other day over to one of the Butts in my outfit just so everyone around could laugh.

We ran it early in the year in '92.

One of my buddies was Corps Commander and sitting at the head table with the Commandant and various other assorted Generals and dignitaries.

Sent a fish over and he dropped it right on top of said buddy's head.....Did not end well!
