I am trying to determine when high porting the guidon (arms extended over the head), while double-timing, started. In all my time in the Army it was always carried at the position of port arms while double-timing. Also, any RVs want to chime in as it is their position of choice while running with rifles. So old Ags, how was it carried during your time on the quad?

I gotta say...I really hated running like that during long runs in the winter. It feels like razor blades are all over your hand when you finish. While I blame my back injuries on jumping out of airplanes, I'm sure Bloody Cross '95 did worse to it.

There's nothing official about it. It just caught on.

If you've ever carried a Battalion, Brigade, or Division guidon, you would get violent if told to highport it.

We had a chromed steel guidon pole. High port that, muthas.

You know, it seems like there are things you'd never forget, but I really can't recall. Seems like it was done back in my day, but I wasn't the stick d*ck, so no personal memories.

I know for sure that the RV's high ported in the fall of '74. Sometimes I would fall out of the dorm and go right into a high port circle for a warm-up before getting to the platoon.

Thanks for the feedback.
CGSC and Ryan the Temp-when were your pisshead years?
Redpot-I assume the guidon bearers were high porting too?
Wow, as far back as '74. Anybody from the '60s remember?

My pisshead year was 1997-1998...they definitely high-ported.

I carried the guidon for my outfit in 1966-67 and I honestly don't remember ever carrying it at high port. I really really hated running with that thing......

Thanks for the feedback JR.

Okay, I have it high porting in '74 but not in '66-'67. I may be narrowing down the time it started. More feedback is appreciated.

I was guidon bearer for B-2 during the 1975-76 school year. The one before me high ported every time we ran, so did I, and so did those after me.

Meatballs do it on the run.

Boozer, Was the GB ahead of you the first to high port in your outfit?

509th...I don't ever remember the outfit running as a group without the stick dick at high port at least some of the time. That would be back to '72 for me.

Might want to get some of the older fish drill team members to comment. I am sure they did the same...even the commander with his saber

Just to follow up, I just had a conversation with the FDT right guide from '73/'74...one of my fish. The commander, right guide, and guidon bearer high ported every time the unit moved at double time anywhere. The entire team high ported when there were 'issues' that needed to be addressed, and sometimes extreme cases 'orbited' the unit while at double time to correct specific improper attitude.

Redpot, thanks for the feedback. This pushes it back to '72. Seemed to be a prominent thing in the Corps. Very interesting.

No, his predecessor, Class of '76, did as well. That would have been the 72-73 school year. That's as far back as I can personally vouch for, but I suspect that at least in B-2, they were probably doing it prior to that.

Boozer...thanks again for the feedback. Can any former cadets from the late '60s help me out?

Try high porting a bass horn

ETA: no we didn't run while hi porting , but we did have to run with 2

I'd rather high port the guidon than an M1. I wasn't guidon bearer but did fill in on occasion. I remember running, carrying the guidon and having the M1 strapped across my back. Remember hooking my thumb at the bottom of the sling to keep it from banging my back on every step.

I was a Guidon Candidate for B-Company in Spring 1989. We high-ported it with 7 Streamers. That sucked. Almost glad I didn't make Guidon bearer, but I still had to PT with it from time to time. Especially during Bloody Cross.

The Guidon Bearers "High-Ported" all of my 4 years inthe FTAB.

I wasn't a Guidon Bearer at A&M, but hig-ported our platoon guidon, on runs at ROTC Advanced Camp. Completely blew the minds of the other cadets. It was awesome.
