Looking into starting a small business or franchise and I am looking for more experienced people that don't mind answering some questions.

I wonder if the SBA hosts forums or meet-ups?

Fwiw, I tried the franchise thing years back. "Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted."

I'd be glad to meet you for a beer and to share my insights/thoughts for whatever value they may have.

Don't know if you're reacting to my post or someone IRL.

I don't think franchises are bad, and my post wasn't an indictment of them, and if I were to meet with someone, i wouldn't be trying to warn them away from a franchise. I have some first hand knowledge of some pitfalls, for sure, and would share the bad and the good.

If your post was a reaction to my earlier post and NOT something else, please don't let your assumptions about what I learned scare you off.

Again, I'd gladly meet with one or both of you to discuss. There are good and bad aspects of franchises... many of those are beyond my knowledge (I only ran my franchise for about 3 years before I shut it down) but I learned a lot that might help you learn some additional questions to ask, if nothing else.

Not directly but I want to know as much as possible before dropping money into one. At the end of the day it is the owner more than the franchise that will make it successful.

I am open to meeting. Not drinking but will buy you a beer.

What part of town are you in? I work SW San Antonio and live in Schertz. This week is kind of full with July 4 and we have company visiting. I could likely do something tomorrow (Tues) after work. If not Tues, we could try something next week.

Own three independent retail stores although one is affiliated with a national brand. Although I've never owned a franchise, I have a couple of friends who own a few fast food chain stores. From conversations:
  • Chains have a proven business model
  • Can be prohibitively restrictive, dictating every last detail you must follow. Can be down to what products you can and cannot use or sell
  • Franchise fees can be high
  • Although you may be 'independent', you are still greatly affected by corporate. Look at Tractor Supply. Their corporate social policies have caused great backlash from rural customers

Want to get together tomorrow then, around 5-ish? Shouldn't take too long, but I might be able to suggest some things to research (or model in your business plan) that you hadn't thought of before.
