My daughter is 10 years old, fifth grader, and am looking to get her into a team sports league. Possibly softball if possible. We live in castle hills, and she attends a private school.

We are open to just about any sport, soccer didn't really catch on with her though. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Has she tried volleyball? My daughter started volleyball at 10. There are several gyms in San Antonio that have leagues. My daughter plays with Hill's gym in La Vernia. You might try Alamo volleyball.

Edit to add golf. Golf is a great sport to get them into at that age. She can also play it the rest of her life.

I've got active 12 y/o and 10 y/o girls.

Use this to find your local little league. It may be too late to sign up for fall ball, but you could try.

There is a youth girl's volleyball league on Monday nights at the George Gervin sports complex. It starts this week I think.

There are quite a few soccer leagues around the city. My girls played at the Fort Sam league before they joined select teams.

Basketball is a bit tougher to find. You may be able to join the YMCA league. We played in a league at the Factory of Champions the last few years.

I have 2 girls (13 and 12). Here are my suggestions:

Tennis- junior team tennis. They play matches on sundays in the fall and spring. I live in Oak Meadow (close to CH) and we have a team. It's a great way to learn the game! I also know several neighborhoods just north of you on NW Military that all have tennis programs.

Volleyball- my daughters play at their middle school but a lot of their friends play club volleyball.

JCC sports- we've only played basketball there but they have a lot of other options.

Swimming- a lot of neighborhoods have summer swim teams that any kids can join, but you can also do year round swimming through AAAA, Wave, and there's one at the JCC.

Softball- my youngest player at Mcallister Park LL but not sure if that's the one you feed into. You may be capitol park LL.

Hope that helps!

She hasn't tried volleyball yet, but my wife loves volleyball. I didn't know where to start on it but I will look into Alamo.

I don't know if my daughter has the patience for golf, I think Tennis might be more her speed for a lifetime sport. But I'll check into golf also. She might like it. Thank you!

I actually had her in Tennis for about a year. She took lessons at incarnate word, but then I got her a professional coach twice a week. The thing with tennis, I think it takes a while before you can enjoy it. Getting the serve down is so hard for her. Plus this hot summer, and our past tennis coach was pushy for a 8 and 9 year old at the time.

But looking back on it, she was doing drills and training non-stop, and the only time she played with someone was at incarnate word. She was brutally competitive though that time, it was doubles, and she complained to her partner that he wasn't pulling his weight. I talked to her about it so I think now she knows she needs to encourage and compliment instead.

I would be interested in the tennis clubs up military, that is really close to me, and right next to her school. Any direction there would be much appreciated.

My daughter is actually a good swimmer. She got burned out of it though. She was taking lessons at gold's gym, and she had a great backstroke. She is still a little clumsy but she could still fly. Her mom was a great swimmer also, she swam competitively for an Army team. I need to look into that also, and will check out AAAA, Wave, and JCC. I don't think there is one at Castle Hills to my knowledge.

Personally, I think softball she would really enjoy. I have wanted to check into that.

That is a great link! I am glad you showed it to me, and I will check it out now.

That sounds pretty cool on the girl's volleyball league at the George Gervin complex. I will try to look into that by tomorrow. I think she would enjoy volleyball.

I don't know about soccer. She played it when she was younger, and didn't really take to it.

Basketball sounds fun! I didn't think of that. I think right now, I am going to focus on team tennis, volleyball, softball, swimming, and possibly golf. See which one or two she might enjoy the most.

Here's the link to learn more about JTT: https://www.satennis.com/juniorteamtennis

I know that Oak Meadow, Hunter's Creek, and Castle Hills Forest and maybe summerfield all have tennis lessons. I think oak meadow is the only JTT team though.

JCC may have tennis as well!

My understanding is for 5th grade, there was only volleyball offered. We missed the deadline. Mostly my daughter at the time didn't want to play and then changed her mind. So we missed it, but that is the only sport at this small private school for 5th.

I'll definitely check into AAAA!
