My wife and I are moving to SA around the end of August and we are looking for a good gym facility that has a lap pool. The only one I really see on-line is Lifetime Fitness. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We haven't decided where we are going to live yet but the business gives us 30 days in a hotel so we are just going to shop around when we get there for housing.

San Antonio isn't really into the whole gym/working out thing. Lifetime is a good one though but the only one I know of here that has a lap pool.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Krobocop, what do you think of the JCC? Is membership reasonable?

I've heard that the YMCA at Thousand Oaks and Henderson Pass has two good pools, but I haven't actually been there.

I used to work out at that YMCA (it's on thousand oaks) when it was a different gym. Yes they have an outdoor lap pool.

silly question probably, but do you have to be jewish to get a membership at the JCC?

ms. obi is a member at the gold's (formerly spectrum) at rogers ranch and 1604 (bitters and 1604). the place is AWESOME, has a large indoor basketball area, an indoor pool, and an outdoor water park type place for the kiddos.

it is very pricey, but it keeps riff raff out, and it gives you access to any gold's gym in the country, including the gigantic gym at basse/281 across from the quarry.

You do not have to be Jewish to join the JCC, dues are about $37 a month I believe. It has a heated lap pool and an infinity pool. Great place.

Rogers Ranch Golds is really cool. We used to be members there until they became Golds. I wouldn't mind having a membership to the JCC. Any JCCers that can affirm whether or not one has to be Jewish?

Yes you do. Orthodox, in fact, but the conversion test is easy.

My family goes to Lifetime. Don't do it.

Pros: Good child care center, outstanding eye candy, waterslides!

Cons: Stone Oak residents, people who confuse "fitness center" with "day care." The next 5th grader from Stone Oak who back-chats me is going to get cold-cocked with an EZ curl bar. God knows his parents dropped the ball in that department.

Do you have to be Jewish to post videos to Facebook?

I was a member of Rogers Ranch (Spectrum/Golds) for about 10 years...they have a nice pool but it is maintained and run like crap. Unsupervised kids, selfish dog paddlers who won't share a lane, chemicals that will destroy your hair and your suit in 2 weeks.

I switched to Lifetime at 1604. IF you can survive the traffic and parking, you might be able to swim, IF they are not having some swim lessons, masters (not) swim practice or some other revenue producing activity. Generally, there is one or two lanes partially available for a few minutes. And ditto what the previous poster said, it is kid central. I felt like I was working out in a mall. A bunch of unsupervised, spoiled, sloppy, brats infesting every inch of the place.

So, my journey ends at JCC. By far, the best run, well-maintained actual lap pool in the city. Once you figure out the patterns of the activities (Masters, Swim lessons, AAAA swim team, etc), you can usually get one of 4 lanes most anytime. Right now, the pool is virtually empty after 6 pm during the weekdays, and very easy to get a lane during the weekend days.

At $65 for a couple, it can't be beat. I was paying upwards of $150 at Rogers Ranch and $130 at Lifetime. Sure, you gotta bring your own towel and shampoo, etc. but it's well worth it.

And no, you don't have to be Jewish. Just a normal, polite, respectful human being that is willing to share a lane and clean up after yourself. Those morans are at LFT!

My mother is the VP of the JCC in San Antonio. We are not Jewish and you do not have to be Jewish to obtain a membership. In fact, I have been told that most members are not Jewish. It has great workout facilities and pool for a fraction of the price of Lifetime. It just isn't 24 hours like Lifetime. Check it out. They give tours daily.

Spectrum/Golds at UTHSC and Evans Rd (281) both have Lap Pools as well. The LifeTime Fitness at the Rim is really nice as well.

I go to both lifetimes The one at The Rim is nicer of the two. I go to the one on 1604 everyday during lunch and never have a problem finding open lanes to swim in. There are a few kids running around but I never have hard time finding open machines.

The JCC is great. Pool, basketball and tennis courts and a weight room with the necessities. I live down the street so I could run there and back. Gold's is pretty nice and updated but a little pricey.
