Outlet for TV question

We want to mount our TV over our fireplace (controversial… I know but that's what we want) so we had an electrician come run power. He mounted the outlet box like this. He gave us the option of mounting it recessed but we didn't wanna make that big of a cut into the stone. I'm now concerned about how far this is gonna stick out. Does anybody know if there is any sort of the outlet box that would put the outlets on the side? The depth of us is fine but when you add in 2 inches or so for the plug to stick out it starts getting pretty far away from the wall

What was added is not really any different than just hanging a cream colored power strip. Not saying you should install a box into your stone, but what was done is kinda worthless. How are you planning to hide the outlet power cord? If you aren't, maybe at least look into a raceway or some cord management hider.

Hopefully you have a good plan in your mind and I just can't see it. Post some pics of the below and surrounding area. Maybe somebody has a good idea.

I think my picture is deceptive. There is no power cord exposed. He went up to the attic and dropped power from another outlet. The outlet you see is all there is. That cable you see coming out is a coax that he said was already there. I think he's going to add another box for that coax. I wanted to have access to the coax so I could potentially put an antenna up.

He gave me the option of having it mounted flush but obviously that would require cutting a much bigger hole into the wall and I didn't wanna do that.

That makes a lot more sense!

Flush plug on the end of a power strip might save you 3/4 of an inch. They also used to make some single gang coax/110v outlets. Wouldn't save you depth, but save you another box maybe.

Ok thanks. I may not know until we mount the tv if we will be satisfied with this protruding outlet. If not I should be capable of cutting out a hole and mounting a flush outlet but I definitely hope to avoid that.

Gotta do some research on mounting bracket options for the TV now.

Side question… does anyone know if an antenna for OTA channels mounted in the attic will work really well? We've tried some of the small flat antennas you put in a window they're pretty frustrating. Or do I need to put a big antenna on the side of the house or the roof?

Most mounts are going to stick that far out anyways and your tv should be angled down which should provide more plug room and any flat plug extension should work. Just wind the tv cords up in a circle and bundle them to the mount bars.

Look at the mounts that are designed for above the mantle and swing down for comfortable viewing height.

For the antenna in the attic. You just need to find a place in your attic where you can mount an outdoor antenna and be able to point it in the right direction. Also important for it to point through a wall vs pointing through a roof with a heat barrier. That heat barrier will block a lot of signal when the roof gets hot from the sun.

Thank you I will try that set up. There's no radiant barrier so that should simplify things for me. I just need to do some research on what direction is best

Attic antennas for hd kinda work but not that great. It really needs to go outside. And you need to drop some reasonable money on it. These 50 dollar jobs are ok but kinda suck. I installed a Televes.

This is about as small or cheap as I would go.

I mounted mine on my house using a dish network mount that was leftover. I tossed the dish part and used the coax too. Aimed in the right direction it will pick up about 78 channels OTA.

Thank you I just ordered one with your link. There were reviews saying it worked really well in the attic so I will try that first and just see before messing with mounting it outside

I wanted an attic antenna as well, but results poor; defeats the purpose. Get a roof top. Much better.

Can help you figure out where to point it.

Depends on how far away from the broadcast antennas you are and what channels you want to pick up as far as how precise you need to be. We used to have something like this when I was a kid to help aim our antenna.

May not be very conducive to attic mounting, but worth looking into if you end up having it outside.

We did the same thing; however, we went with cutting a small stone out of the fireplace. Love the outcome. The outlet our electrician put in blends well with the stone. Also, ours was for Christmas lights my wife wanted over the mantle, not a TV, but the same outcome.

Our electrician gave us the option to mounted flush but I was a little chicken to cut that much out of the stone. Maybe I should've gone that route since I can't imagine ever putting a TV anywhere else in this living room, but the previous owner had the TV on a different wall so I guess that's what gave me pause.

I did this DIY in a previous home but it was drywall above the fireplace and I was able to just use a kid I ordered on Amazon running from a plug inside a cabinet below. I was happy with how that came out

Also made in China, so make sure it has free returns in case it doesn't function as expected. .

But seriously, if yall are buying stuff that has electrical components, I like to make sure it's at least UL listed. Most things on there are Chinese junk that is not. It might be fine but I don't know and it's always worried me.

If it has a label doesn't mean a thing. All that crap scares me
