Anyone have thoughts on air cooled vs liquid cooled home generators? Brands? Cummins? Koehler? Generac?

In the market for the same thing, something in the 6-10kw range? Will be following this thread.

I've researched this a lot. Initially wanted diesel... Longevity but fuel management required. Then went to natural gas-most common recommendation. Liquid cooled, quieter, runs at lower RPM, lasts longer more expensive... BUT in my environment, the coast it will probably rust out before I get the extra money out of it. So, going with air cooled and in 10 years throw it away and get another.

Variables if you live on ranch and can use the diesel, how much space you have, natural gas access. I decided on Kohler over others.... Multiple recommendations

I like my diesel one. It is 35hp, runs at 1600 rpm and burns about 3/4 gallon per hour depending on load. If you have natural gas and feel like that would a reliable source during a crisis, then that is the way you should go. I like diesel because I have thousands of gallons of it already that we use all the time, so it's not a big deal to maintain that. BUT... if we ever get in a situation where I need 2000 gallons of diesel for my generator, the generator is probably pretty low on the list of things that matter much.

My electrician recommends Kohler over any other brand.

I know this is a tangent but since folks are talking about ranches a diesel, if you're in that situation, look at a PTO version. 15kW for $1000.

Bought a Honda EU7000IS after the great Texas freeze. Saved my ass during Beryl. Can't run a central air but plenty of power for rest of house, fridges, and a window unit / portable AC. Then when we moved I took it with me.

These generators are getting better (and appliances are getting much more efficient). There will always be a demand for a whole home generator, but I'm loving the portable / cheap man version. I saw a 28KW portable the other day - crazy. I run my home off a 12KW generator today connected to the meter. Would like something a little larger, but as long as it's maintained, it's fantastic.
