Finally getting my roof replaced after a year and half of back and forth with Allstate and getting a PA involved. Roofer I'm using is recommending either IKO Cambridge or Pinnacle Pristine. Both seem pretty comparable, but I like the algae warranty on the Pinnacle. I'm in College Station if that matters, and I also have foam insulation in my attic under the roof decking if that matters.

Any experience with either product? Experience with warranty service from either manufacturer?

Any pros or cons to upgrading to a class 4 vs class 3?

Worked as a territory manager for TAMKO Building products about 6 years ago. At least when I worked for them, just about every manufacturer's warranty is generically the same. They're all generally just covering any manufacturing defects, it's installation defects that can get different - depending on certified contractor programs, how many of their accessory products are used, etc.

My biggest suggestion is to go with a reputable roofer and not just some "chuck in a truck" that last week was doing plumbing and next week will be doing automotive repair.

ETA: read the fine print in the warranty when it comes to the spray foam in your attic. A lot of shingle manufacturers still want your roof to "breathe". I have seen warranty claims denied because the attic was foamed. I know at one point, Owens Corning would only honor their shingle warranty if it was their spray foam that was used.

Both of those options are not what I'd consider better shingles. I've roofed exclusively in the region for about a decade now and I can tell you that after everything you've gone through, the minimum I'd be putting in my customers home would be an IKO Dynasty. I'd prefer Certainteed Landmark or OC Duration. The Cambridge is an entry level shingle. I've never put on an Atlas because there are simply better quality products out there that have served my customers better. Unless the roofer was uninvolved in the process and is trying to meet a low budget, there is really no reason to use those shingles. For that install I'd do Certainteed Landmark and it would come with a 25 year workmanship warranty for materials and labor.

Certainteed doesn't waste time with defect claims. I've never had to take one all the way through the process but when I call my reps, it's documented, and the process is started ASAP.

See if your roofer will improve your shingle and warranty.

As for class 4, they can be worth it but the upgrade cost is usually more than most wants to cover. I don't think BCS has as good a chance of seeing the benefit of that shingle for the cost vs a place like Austin, for example. Most carriers don't give much discount for class 4 over class 3 so it doesn't make sense sometimes. If you do want a class 4 you can look at iKO Nordic or Malarkey Vista.

Thanks both of y'all. Have a meeting scheduled next week to discuss options. Those were just a couple of brands he threw out there so good to know. They also have some sort of Certainteed certification so I can ask about that as well.

Jason recommended the Certainteed Landmark to me last year. I am glad I went with it. It's a very good product, IMO. From everything I read, their algae resistance technology is much better than alot of the other manufacturers.

i Would go with Certainteed or Owens Corning. gaf is pretty but has granule issues. Avoid tamco at all cost. Class 4 over 3 in BCS is a waste of money but some roofers like to push it with the insurance discount excuse, What company is doing the roof ? oh yeah, and once it's complete, get rid of Allstate and do not move to farmers insurance either

I'd call Jason if I were in your shoes, unless you've already signed on with the roofer.

He's helped out A LOT of people from TexAgs and is no bs and shoots you straight.. with better shingles.

Those are not the products my husband recommends for the area either. We are also in BCS. He generally recommends Owens Corning products here locally and for his Houston area clients (they are also Platinum Preferred with Owens Corning). I know you are working with another roofer, but if you want info/clarification on roof claims with insurance, my husband is always happy to have a conversation (no strings attached).

Id like to throw my husband's hat in the ring as well. He has helped a lot of people from TexAgs as well in BCS and Houston. Scott Merrill with Holden Roofing.

Also- even if you have signed with a roofer, you can typically back out as long as the physical job has not yet started. It can be a crappy thing to do, but it can also save you from a bad roofer.

Also avoid State Farm.

I appreciate the offers for help. In most cases I'd take you up on it. After initial denials by insurance this company did several neighbors roofs. So I talked to my neighbors and several had issues with insurance. They put me in touch with this roofer and they were great helping me through the process, honest assessment of damages, and explained my options for a PA. Given my neighbors experience and the help they've already provided they've earned my business so far. Those 2 options were just a couple he mentioned they had installed in the neighborhood not the only options they have. We meet Friday to go through all that. Thanks everyone though!

Allstate. Told my broker to get me away from them this time. Initially denied coverage. Denied again in re-inspection. All my neighbors got new roofs over the the last year. I re-opened the claim again. Denied. Got a PA and that process got then to pay out plus interest. Such a pain in the ass.
