My young son started using his own shower upstairs. We noticed this around the vent. I assume it is from him not using vent fan when showering and maybe moisture getting on the ceiling? Is this mold? And if so, do I just call someone to replace the drywall or is this a whole home evacuation type of thing? The attic is above this.

That is a squirt with vinegar and wipe off with damp cloth kind of thing.

Make sure the bathroom rids itself of moisture when used. Turn that exhaust on. Unsightly, but not a big deal.

Buy some Concrobium at Lowe's or HD. It kills the root of the mold and keeps it from returning.

Tell him to always run the fan during and an extra 10m or so after hes done showering and the bathroom door is open so it can help clear the humidity out. As mentioned above its an easy clean up but it is still molding due to excess moisture.

They make a timer switch you can install on the fan so it runs for a while after the shower. Good thing for a kids bathroom if you can get them trained to turn it on.

Yeah good idea, because most kids aren't going to remember to turn it off.

Absolutely. Watch a YouTube video. Turn off the breaker if you want to be unchallenged. Though that will likely kill the light too.

If that ceiling is flat finish and you continue to have issues it would be better to repaint it with eggshell or satin finish whenever there are humidty issues.

Almost every case I see like this is from either people failing to run the vent fan while showering and at least 10 minutes after you are done. Also can be caused by a fan that is moving to low cfm for the bathroom size.

I've tried these on two different bathrooms in two separate houses and both would fail to kick on while someone was showering (and humidity was obviously high), but then kick on randomly during the day when no one had showered for hours. As they're $35ish each, I stopped wasting the time and money and just went to the timer switches. I bought the one that has 10/20/30/60 min. options and those will be the default on all vent fans going forward.

Have had a few customers want these on completed bath remodels and I like the concept over the humidistat switch
