I am just looking for feedback on our garage door repair and what caused it to happen. We try to close garage door yesterday and it is crooked and won't close, cable off the spools on both sides, wheels start falling off and door starts coming off the track and door is slightly bent now in the middle at the bottom.

Repair person comes and says that the spring is too strong for our door and that is why this happened. He gets door closed with part of it being zip tied to the track just for the night. This happened at 10:00 pm so repairs are scheduled for today.

I call the company that placed the spring in October of 2025 and tell them what happened and that emergency repair person said it was because the spring is the wrong one. First company says that is a made up reason and that the door must have hit something on its way down which I know it didn't.

Is it possible that the spring was the problem? It is the only thing that didn't have damage it appears. Just curious what the cause could have been because there was a lot damage and as of now we apparently need new tracks, cables, spring and door.

1. Every contractor always complains about the previous contractor's work.
2. All else being equal, I'd believe the guy that has actually been to the house and seen the door off the tracks.

From what you describe, either could be right. Everyone seems to agree that the force was being applied un-evenly which is why the door got crooked. Could be from a too-weak or too-strong spring, or unbalanced springs, or a broken spring, or a set bolt thing that slipped on the garage spring axle. Cable could also have slipped or broken. 2nd guy could also be right. Something very tiny could've gotten lodged in the track and created the problem and you might not know it.

Post photos of both springs and the tracks and we may be able to help more.

We had everything replaced yesterday because everything was broken or visibly bent except the spring. The new company also put a new spring, track, cables, door, etc. When I spoke to the original company that placed the spring I told him all the parts that bent and broke and he told me that wasn't possible. It absolutely was possible because our door was zip tied to the track for over night because so many pieces broke off.

I was just trying to understand why it happened.
