I'm guessing the ballast on this light fixture failed because all 4 bulbs stopped working at once. I'm guessing bulbs are still good. Would yall recommend

A) Just replacing the ballast and keeping the bulbs
or
B) Remove the ballast and direct wire to LED bulbs?

I'm always short on time and have to work this in to a bunch of other projects (currently have my dryer disassembled and waiting on new roller bearings to arrive), so the quickest fix would get priority here.

Thanks. Is it even worth messing with the wiring in that case? I can get a whole new LED fixture for $40.

I've also thought about adding a second one further back in the shed so I could just get two new LED ones and remove the old one completely.

If you have everything you need it will take about 10 minutes.

I'm lazy and might just replace the fixture. Especially if I wanted it to match a second one nearby to please my OCD.

Thanks. Might just go with two new fixtures. All I'd need is a few feet of romex and a junction box to put the two lights on the same switch.

II converted all but one of my lights to LED. Last ones is using up the bulbs I have left before it will be converted to LED too.

man good timing on this post....I was in my garage this weekend looking at my two sets of t8 lights thinking maybe it's time to swap to LED. Sounds like it's past time to swap to LED from looking at all these posts LOL

what's the difference in plug and play and direct wiring the LED bulbs? I assume it's just to bypass the ballast and use less power (as well as eliminating a ballast going bad in the future)

We had this same problem and went LED and it is so nice!

Howdy, Been There, Done That, LED is the way to go!! Replaced our six florescent fixtures, six, followed directions, took out ballast, LOVE the LEDs, instant on, much better light.

There are a lot of these available, I have a few in my garage. They do produce light. Just screw them in like a light bulb so who would have to add that.

NOT saying others will be lucky as me but the fixture is ancient, so why not?

I grabbed a couple of these on clearance for $45 at my local Home Depot. Looking forward to swapping out the old fixture and adding a second toward the back of my shed.

Oof…I hate those things. I've been slowly swapping all Fluorescent and led back to incandescent/halogen. We all noticed an increase in headaches from being under these types of lights after an hour or so . so I've been on a mission to install larger old school energy wasting bulbs. The light is not as harsh and more natural. It's easier on the eyes.

I have about 20 of the 4 bulb flourescent fixtures at work and at home and was always changing out ballasts (and bulbs as if the ballast goes out for too long the bulbs go bad also). It got to where a ballast costs as much as an entire LED fixture. I have replaced 90% of them over time with LED fixtures, not the bulbs but the entire fixture. I love them. Some are years old but I've never touched them since install compared to always changing out ballasts and bulbs. They also draw a lot less power and I think less heat. I am older so the brighter light doesn't bother me, I need the extra bright lights for older eyes. Some models have several adjustments for light quality also.
