We are currently converting an attached 2-car garage (20' x 20') into a climate-controlled space that will principally serve as a workout room. The previous owner had done a cheap DIY epoxy coating that has chipped off in several spots, so we want to do something with the existing epoxied concrete floor. We will have rubber tiles/mats under exercise equipment that will cover ~1/3 of the floor.

I've thought about having the concrete professionally epoxied, but am somewhat concerned about how long it will smell. Plus my wife would ideally like something that looks more finished/interior.

Recommendations?

Are you removing the garage door, leveling the floor, and adding AC? IF so, Vinyl composite tile is probably durable enough while also looking decent.

Garage door is removed and replaced by a wall & exterior door, and HVAC thru the ceiling. Nothing done yet on floor as far as removing existing DIY epoxy or leveling, although it appears very level.

Vinyl composite tile is what my wife has mentioned. Would the floor absolutely need to be leveled? Can it be applied directly over the existing DIY epoxy? Any concern about having weights & other workout equipment on a concentrated area of the floor?

Just completed a private Gym-SPA-etc etc 2400sf where the Owner chose to copy same two floorings a local gym ala Golds/Trufit employed, so that's a trip to go see what's working in your climate.

As for me in the Aggieland climate, I would elect the black sheep in a glue-down Karastan or Berber.
Our workouts would be suitable to that surface, e.g.
  • stationary bike, row, stairs, elevated tread, etc.
  • free weights if an all-in-one pulley weight tower doesn't fit ... and preferred
  • might be some ceiling hung equipment
  • no more jump rope, etc so nothing akin to a basketball floor
Gotta draw since me got no grammar MasterArch '76
