Smoke detectors making me crazy

So I have five hardwired detectors in my house that are 17 years old. They can be a real pain, especially during winter when the furnace runs. It seems like just hot air blowing on them will make them chirp, and it's worse when the batteries are not new. I feel like I'm constantly replacing 9volts back-up batteries even though the detectors are powered.

Have these things gotten better over the years? Will new replacements eliminate the problem?

Smoke alarms do have an expiration date, I think 10 years. I was having issues with mine and just went ahead and replaced them all. New ones came with a 10year batter so I don't have to worry about that either.

Get all new ones with 10 yr lithium battery. One should be combination carbon monoxide and smoke alarm.

Try for the same brand as existing alarm and it may be plug and play, otherwise you might order wiring adapters on Amazon to change brands.

I was having issues w/ my smoke detectors as well after around 20 years so replaced all of them a few years ago and it was plug and play, super simple. No issues since

I replaced mine with the exact same brand. It was a quick snap out, snap in for each unit.

10 year life

Take one down and look at the date on the stamp

The longer they are exposed to dust the more picky they become over time.
You can try take them down and clean with compressed air but if the are approaching 10 years or more they should be replaced.

When you swap them out, remove the batteries from the old ones, then push and hold the test button for 10 secs on each one to ensure you drain the capacitor. They can still chirp after you remove the battery.

It's the first few minutes until they get tossed, especially if you are replacing to get rid of beeping. Swap out the first one, start moving the ladder for #2 and the old one beeps. If you don't realize it's the old one beeping, you'll chase ghosts.
