Cross posting my question on a few other forums.

My insurance company has approved my claim to get a new roof. I had a company my neighbors used and recommended come buy and check out my roof and take a look. My insurance company suggested I get a few quotes for the roof replacement and let the roofing company know that the insurance was recommending me getting quotes. I asked the roofing company that checked out my roof for a quote for the replacement but they won't give me one and instead are insisting I share with them the "loss statement" document or essentially a breakdown of what the insurance company is willing to pay first. To me this seems backwards? Shouldn't they be able to provide me with an estimate first before me sharing what the insurance is willing to cover? Not sure why it's a big deal to get an estimate as it's simple to get estimates for everything else related to home repairs.

Any thoughts here?

I've outlined this process many times across Texags. There are multiple ways to skin this cat. In my signature, there is an article of sorts that I wrote about exactly this question. If you want to give me a call, I'll explain why they ask and how you can make all this work without making it harder on the contractor or you. Denying the scope to the contractor ultimately puts you at a disadvantage. Long story short, the insurance scope is for the contractor. He's billing off of it. He is also checking to make sure you have the right policy and aren't going to be surprised by extra costs. He's checking for shortages on the scope, as well. You already know your cost (deductible). "Free" Estimates cost good roofers money. We pay for very expensive software and quality measurements to make sure it's accurate. So, for this free estimate is costs about $100 every time give or take. But, there is a way around this that is the best of both worlds that will allow you to keep your scope private if you want, and not cost your roofer a headache and fees in creating an estimate if he knows what he's doing. Most of what he needs is on the scope already and you don't need to give him the whole thing to do it. If he still won't do it, then he's just being difficult and it's time to pick another roofer. If I have to earn a customers trust by being flexible on the process, so be it. He should be as well if he wants to work.
