Starting to run out of easily accessible storage in the attic, so I was thinking about building or buying something to store plastic bins hanging from the ceiling above my garage door. Quick google research gave a few ideas. Have any of y'all built something or installed something that can do this well?

I know several people with the system you linked to at lowes and they love it. Nice and out of the way. I might spring for that if I need more storage room.

Big fan of SafeRacks. Bought mine at Costco and opted for the 'professional' install option. Had them in two houses.

So I would say it depends on what you are storing and if you are only doing those single layers or storage. My garage setup allowed enough clearance for a double layer and i have since discovered an issue with the setup and how it relates to probably all hanging plastic totes. While the sides are structured to hold a significant amount of weight without warping, the bottoms of these are not. One of the top boxes in the pic held some electrical supplies; a few extra can lights, a 100ft 12/2 roll, and a partial 250ft 14/2 roll. After about a year, the bottomed of the tote had sagged so much that I could no longer slide it past the lid rim of the tote below it. That amounted to about 4 inches of deflection. Do I think it would ever completely give out, no. But I am in the middle of a complete garage reorganization and will be switching over to a rack system.

I put in one of these a year or two ago. Love it.

I expect you could build a equivalent of the lowes racks with unistrut cheaper. But in any case the black and yellow boxes are significantly cheaper at sams club that at any of the big box stores. Not sure about current pricing but sams on sale is $7.99 and lows and home depot are over $12. I have bought a few hundred for my business over the last few years.

Maybe foolish, but I don't trust those boxes not to warp over time. I built my shelf out of old fashioned 2x4s with a plywood top. It's two rectangle frames topped with plywood. They're just a few inches above the door when raised. The frames are attached to the studs on the side walls and back (front?). Then they're supported at the track corners by all thread that goes up through the sheetrock, through a 2x6 that spans two joists. Washers and lock nuts at both ends. Very solid. You can make it as deep as you want. Mine is 4' deep and maxes the width and height. Clear or color match to preference.

I did the exact same thing around the perimeter of my garage and they are great, strong shelves and offer a lot of space. I hang a lot of stuff on the underside, too. I was also concerned about the ceiling rack systems adding too much weight to the joists, and these shelves transfer much of the load to the walls and don't sit in the middle of the span.
