I think the motor is bad, but I don't have a ton of experience with ceiling fans, so I want to make sure I haven't missed something. Hunter Crestfield 52", if it matters.

Lights are working but the fan is not. I've got 120V coming out of the ceiling. I swapped the lower half with another fan. Bad fan lower works on good fan and good fan lower doesn't work on bad fan. Inside the lower half is the capacitor and speed switch.

It has to be the motor, right?

Could it just be the switch? That's where I'd start, if you haven't ruled it out.

What switch? I think I've ruled all of them out.

The wall switch is sending and interrupting 120V to the ceiling. Both the speed and direction switches are contained in the lower half. A different, working fan's lower half did not work on the bad fan and the bad fan's lower half did work on the good fan.

Is the bad sacrificial fan the same brand and size as the fan in question?

The good fan is a 60" and the bad is a 52" but otherwise, they are identical. If I remember correctly, the capacitors had the same specs.

If you know enough to check the capacitor specs, you are ahead of most. Maybe triple check all your connections and look for damaged wires. At least fans are pretty cheap if you gotta pitch it and get a new one.

Lifetime Warranty?

I am pretty sure I've ruled out everything but the motor itself, but I wanted to make sure before I called Hunter about the lifetime warranty. Fun fact that I didn't know before yesterday: Hunter's lifetime warranty applies only to the motor. All other components get a 1 year warranty. But anyway, they walked me through their troubleshooting steps (which wasn't a lot) and then said they would send a new motor so I guess we'll see what happens when it comes in!
