Anyone done this and have recommendations?

Unfortunately my driveway setup (long and narrow, close fence-line, back detached garage, strict HOA) make other options unfeasible.

It seems like options I find online are ridiculously expensive (1-3k+). Why is this so and any recommendations?

I just had a new roof installed, I guess plan to have this thing installed hopefully last until we sell this house (probably 10 years) or plan on a roof repair when we take it down?

Always best for the goal to be away from house & garage doors but post at least a Google Earth photo to gain better suggstions ... and sorry for the pickle you're in.

Can draw some ideas for you if I get an email.

Thanks. Hard to see much in Google Maps. There is an iron fence evenly splitting the grass area/property line with neighbor along driveway. Structure between garage and house is a covered breezeway.

No way I would mount it to the roof. They make ones that have arms on them that are mounted to the soffit. Much easier and less costly of a repair then the roof.

My recommendation - get one of the portable temporary hoops. After 3 years, it won't get much use and you can give it away. Just my experience.

Well, just finished a private indoor gym that required some study of basketball arcs but clearance behind the goal to avoid damage was not a concern nor part of this.

It seems clear that the least damage to house/roof would be a portable goal, such as what our 1ac neighbors employed for their kids, now all grown, some on their K-12 school teams.

The one above offers the convenient slat board that kicks the ball back to thrower.

The iron fence poses a problem in ball retrieval, another location consideration.
Trial & error will be the final judge but I might begin with locations such as
  • well in front of garage to cov.walk roof angle - gives most distance from fence
  • well in front of garage doors, should they be metal or fiberglass strength to take after bounce hits
  • driveway front of house, located so front yard is behind goal (not side yard/fence behind goal ... perhaps some sort of block preventing balls going into street

Yeah, the portable goal is an obvious solution I've considered. But the only place it can go to effectively shoot would be in front of the garage. Maybe alongside the breezeway which still blocks the garage access (where we always keep our cars). My kid would mainly use it when I am not around, and not sure he or my wife can effectively move it. And I can totally see my HOA losing its crap if it gets left out in the grass.

The soffit solution - what is this? Not really sure how anything can be properly anchored without something going into the roof. Unfortunately no great outdoor wall space either to mount, and not sure that's any better for the house impact.

I have a similar garage/driveway config to you and installed the roof-mounted goal from Amazon linked below a few years ago (54" acrylic backboard). It was about $2k at the time and has performed and held up well so far.

Well, good to know its decent quality at least.

Just don't understand why the wall-mounted versions can be found for a few hundred but the roof ones are all 1-2k. I mean how expensive can a mount be...wonder if a good handy-man can create something custom.

Just make sure the handyman can fix the roof too!

Why not just stick on the side of driveway?
We don't have much space either between our neighbors house.. it hits it sometimes..

That looks nice, but think our neighbor is maybe half that distance - and an iron fence splits it. I think the back of your hoop foundation would basically be right on the fenceline. I got to go over the HOA rules as well. There seems to be surprisingly few driveway/mobile basketball goals in my neighborhood which makes me wonder.

OK
1. EZ to move but wonder when older larger forceful if goal would stay in place
https://rebrand.ly/22dn9nf
then previous suggested locations might become viable, being temporary

2. Original roof mount ideas
https://rebrand.ly/eztvrwb
with either residual damage from misses (opt for largest backboard and pray for no strong winds)
or preventive damage via a) metal roofing - even if overlay, HOA permitting, b) re-roof later with stronger shingles after hail damage + fascia repairs/upgrades

3. Wall mount on 2st brick house side
https://rebrand.ly/tm9r6k2
with some threats in this shallow back court of retrieving balls over fence

4. Swim family reporting that
https://rebrand.ly/jhv1u22
a water polo goal might give enough similar practice at home to do the job
and that Waterpolo is a growing sport in cities that provide enough "water time" to teams and even rec.swimmers ... this IS where you have invested money/space/interest into this property, not tennis, BBall, BaseBall, other open field sports.

Sorry you are not close enough to a park or church BB court, et al.

just dig the hole to where you can only see the concrete on your side of the fence, and get a good bottom half of the pour to run further back under the fence. you'd have a wider base that way too

We had one mounted on our garage roof when we were kids and used it all the time. Countless games of horse, 21, and knockout took place there. Can't remember if my dad cut into the roof or just bolted some 2x6s down but it worked great. Highly recommend.

Every time the topic of a basketball goal comes up, I like to tell this story. Forgive me if you've read/heard it before.

When I was a kid (say 8-9), we had the semi-troublesome neighbor kid, Andy, 2-3 years my senior. He wasn't a bad kid per se, just had a knack for getting into trouble. Due to my dad's apparent strictness (and sometimes loud yelling) with me and my sisters, Andy and most of the other neighborhood kids stayed clear of my dad. Plus, my dad didn't care much for Andy anyway. Well, Andy wanted to sink a pole into concrete for a goal and knew my dad had a post hole digger (one of those cork screw jobs). He asked me to ask my dad if he could borrow it, telling me "I don't want to talk to your dad...!" Long/short, my dad let him borrow it. How could he damage that, anyway?

So, one night soon, we were all out playing, horsing around and Andy was busy at work with the hole and at some point we heard this faint cry of "help...help...help" in the distance. At first, we didn't know what it was but upon investigation, we found that Andy had gone head first into the 3-4 foot hole he'd dug! How he did that, I'll never know, but we came upon him and all we could see was his feet going back and forth sort of like a cockroach on his back. We rescued him, and he soon finished the goal. He actually did a damn good job on it, as I shot hoops on the basket for years before we moved.

I told my dad/family about the incident and they howled. When Andy brought the digger back to my dad, my dad asked, "well, how did everything go?" Andy was too embarrassed to answer.

That story has been a family classic every since.

You can certainly mount it on the roof. Just make sure the base and structure is solid and try to hit your roof rafters. Seal the holes with a butyl tape of some sort or a heavy dose of caulking. Also, no matter what, prepare for it to leak or rot. It might not, but it might. Also, missed shots and a basketball beating on the shingles will take it's toll.

***NOTE***--- if any care is taken on the install, you likely won't have any issues or at least nothing that a roofer cannot fix when or if you move. However, decking and shingle repairs can be pricey depending on severity of the issues to be fixed and the shingles probably won't match well, which will put you into a full slope replacement from any prospective buyer. I'd probably just leave the goal on the roof or try to find any other alternative.

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!

But for real, ya gotta live life, man. In 20 years, you'll only recall the shenanigans and fun with the kid or that the kids had with it. I don't like poking holes in it but it's still just a roof.

As an aside, I googled and found this:

https://www.produnk.com/basketball_goals/roof_mount/?adgroupid=50841030454&creativeid=479480692719&keyword=roof%20mounted%20basketball%20hoop&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAzPy8BhBoEiwAbnM9O2rJYSLyliyO6W95RRpRO8ujeMYMJiDXO9ZewtZmicZS9rNqpv8tOxoCx-MQAvD_BwE

This looks pretty snazzy, strong, and a few small holes. Seems reasonable. Not sure what they want for them.
