Single location black wire in and out.

New smart light switch has red black and white plus the ground.

Instructions:
Black hot wire to black switch (live) wire
Red (load) I'm assuming goes on the dead part of the outgoing black
White (neutral) on switch????

I've only got black in and out. Light works with old switch just changed the fixture.

Help me Texags!

You house is illegal and must be rebuilt
Unfortunately having just the switch legs in box has not been allowed by code for many years, you sure not a neutral stuffed in the back of the box maybe with a wire nut? Not kosher but tying the neutral wire to the ground lug may make it work neutral and ground bonded in first panel so should be the same Potential but noise may make flaky

So black in, red out and find a white neutral to tie into?

It's not working with the white loose so it's got to be connected somewhere.

It requires a neutral. Sounds like you don't have a neutral. Therefore it won't work.

Agree with SWK. If you bought a smart switch that requires a neutral, but you don't have a neutral, then you're SOL. There are a few smart switches out there that don't require a neutral, but most do, since they need constant power to maintain connection.

I got it working, sort of. Combined Red and Black to hot. White to the black coming out of the bottom half of the old switch. There is a gang of neutrals in the 4 switch box at the front door, but none of the neutrals connect to the actual switch.

The light worked for a few minutes, but flickered and went out.

Still open to suggestions.

The black the white wire is connected to is connected to the bottom half of the switch next to it.

Red is upper right, white is lower right

You have a neutral bundle put white in there, black to hot on old switch red to not hot black from old switch

Didn't work. No power to switch for wifi, or no light comes on. Hooked up the original paddle switch and light bulb works.

Swapped the red to the top black wire on the paddle switch, the black to the bottom black with the white as neutral. Opposite the diagram. Working now. <shrugs>

Is this a part of 3 way switch?

No. It specifically says it's NOT for 3 way switches.

Unfortunately there is no standard position for line or load on switches. Glad you seem to have it working. Also when moving wires while experimenting wagos are your friend.
