Just wondering if one of these closet companies is a better way to go than having the builder do it?

Builder by far. I got a quote once from California Closets and it was absolutely ridiculous.

Your builder's millworker should be able to handle anything you want. Price will depend on what you chose and how expensive of a wood work shop you went with. I would work with the builder, even with their markup.

Also look at Container Store closet systems. Similar to California in some ways. It not just Elfa anymore.

A. Fancy closet systems marketing eye candy are good to buy for those clueless ... advice: hire someone competent to install. Here the extra costs may be worth it for rich beginners or Prez Libraries around here.

B. Best to serve as inspriations for those creating their own closets from scratch with help, i.e.
  • gathering what is to be stored & how
  • drawing up the space, then storage for above
  • pro cabinetman/shop w/material & hardware (if any) options
  • some may need a General Contractor to oversee this and any hurdles ahead

Those that have done A. and visit B. express regrets and admiration.
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

Depends on builder grade.

If we're talking particle board with minimal supports (like mine) I'd just get the credit and install wire racks myself.

If we're talking something sturdy, then the builder is the way to go.
