Need to update 1950s tile around tube. Any experience with the acrylic surround? Do you have to replace the tub as well to use the surround ?

you don't have to replace the tub, but any prefabricated surround that you go with will have it's own method of install. There may be a decent amount of work associated with installing the surround properly and making sure it fits and looks good.

You may also look into tile resurfacing.
