I've got an irregularly shaped area about 8' x 4' that has gradually sank a few inches over the past year or so. I've attempted to fill this area with some extra soil and had no luck. After the heavy rains (Houston area) this weekend, it has noticeably sank further. I was walking this area and my foot punched a good 6-8 inches down through the sod.

Can anyone recommend either a soil/foundation repair company or perhaps an engineer to come investigate what's going on?

Moving water is the usually the most common cause. Are there any drain lines passing under the affected area? How old is the house?

I had an old cistern outside my back door walked out one day and there was a hole about 8 feet deep and 3 feet in diameter

Get one of those probing rods and stick it in there and push it down and see if you can hit some old clay pipe or see how far you can push it

Thats not clay contracting. There is water flowing that is causing the ground to sink. Or an old unmarked cesspool or septic system.

Yeah I got myself a poking stick and started prospecting. I'm hitting what's likely my cast iron sewer line. House is a late 50s build so that's always been a risk. I was under the impression it ran the other side of the property, but I'll do some digging around and see what's up.

Parent's house is a 1955 build and they had an old septic tank cave in and leave a crater in the yard (hadn't been used since the 60's when the city sewer connection was installed) .
