I'm curious if anyone has found an easy means of sizing my home and shop for a stand by generator. So how many watts and surge watts required to run everything. Is this basically completed by me walking my house and documenting watts and surge for all my appliances/AC, etc? Any help on making this easy and accurate would be appreciated. Thank you.

Are you looking at a permanent standby or portable with interlock/transfer switch?

join this group and start with the "Guides" section. All the info you'll ever need on portable generators.

edit....just saw that OP might be looking for a whole home generator, which would be a different animal.

your biggest obstacle will probably be the start up current on your central AC. However, you can add a soft start to is and substantially lower your start up current. I have a westinghouse 11500 that I ran on natural gas during Beryl and ran my downstairs 4 ton AC, all the lights, internet/computers/tvs and we were able to cook in my all electric kitchen like normal....especially the coffee pot LOL.

To clarify I am not looking at a standby generator. I am looking at a portable generator or even a PTO.

are you looking for a duel/tri fuel or just a gas generator? The general consensus is a Duromax 13,000 or a Westinghouse 11500 will run most homes and is the best bang for the buck.
