Looking to install a freestanding tub in replacement of an old built in Roman tub.

Space measures 59 1/2' between sheet rock. If I go with a 59" tub how much clearance does that leave me (assuming sheet rock is pulled out and replaced with backer board) if I want to tile the surround? Feel like this cutting it really close.

If the backer board is also 1/2", the space you have available remains the same. However, tiling the backer board will eat up another 1/2".

Just take out the 2x4s and install 2x3s

This. And if I'm understanding the OP, correctly, it will need tile on both sides, which would eat up a full 1"? Brings the space to 58-1/2". Sounds like you need to consider other options.

They also make a 1/4" backer board, but I don't think that's enough margin for you without some other change.

1/4" backer board is also not recommended for walls, right? Just floors?

I didn't know that. You're probably right. I've never used it.

yes, both sides will be tiled. I think 58' max tub is the safe bet.
