Ags,
I'm in the process of rewiring a lake cabin. We currently have a window AC unit that runs off of 240V, but the electrician said that with newer, more energy efficient units, most window AC units run on 120V power. I am debating whether I need to now pay the extra cost to wire a 240 circuit into the home or just go with a 120V circuit.
Anyone have much experience with recent AC window unit purchases or renovation projects involving window ACs?
Thanks.

Depends on the size. I have found nothing that will do 24000 BTU that is not 220. Even the models that are labeled inverter are 220. I love the midea u shaped inverter but 12000 BTU is their largest. Not sure what the electrician's strategy is. I would not run a window unit off a 120V 20 amp branch circuit if I were rewiring. I would at a minimum bring a dedicated circuit. And the reality is the wire for a 220 unit would be smaller and cheaper than what you would need for 110. But I would still run dedicated 12Ga wire size to support 120V 20A circuit, especially if you are considering a unit with heat. If a really small space maybe you can get by with a small unit and 120, but especially if walls are open run wire now to cover any possible future use.
