Anyone have experience with these? Good quality brands? Also wondering if these better in theory but not in practice. Would really like to open up our guest room and use for more than just an empty bed 98% of the time.

Years ago we had a homemade one in the living room of a small lake house. It worked great for guests. I think it sounds perfect for you. I bet there are lots of nice ones available now.

you can get them as part of a desk, my neighbor had one for their grandson's room.

My brother also had one before they moved, it folded up into what looked like a dresser, not vertically on the wall.

I purchased this one several years ago for my office/2nd bedroom, and it has held up well.

It wasn't terribly difficult to put together but was a bit fiddley for one person and it did take some time. It's not a cheap route to go. Eventually I will put some built in wardrobes on either side.

I will say if you leave sheets on it while in storage the opening/closing mechanism will/can catch a sheet and cut it. Kind of annoying.

I've sold these for clients. There's some really good ones out there. I'm not sure what the brands are, but I believe that they were bought off of Wayfair or something like that. The mattress felt like something that I would sleep on almost like one of those purple mattresses. They look really good and they don't take up a lot of space so you can combo and have an office and bedroom all at the same time.

We bought one from Amazon in January. It folds up into a cabinet. First time son and DIL slept on it said mattress was hard. Got a topper for it and it's great now. When not in use it looks like a nice piece of furniture.

some rooms benefit more from a queen sleeper sofa (w/thick mattress) in order to provide two uses, not just one

others elect a full/queen tubular pipe bunk, etc etc etc

We got this one and like it a lot. It feels a little wobbly on hard flooring, but we got a cheap rug to put under it when guests come over and that made a big difference.

Bought and installed this one from Amazon for our guest room. Similar situation, was turning it into a mostly office/occasional guest room and this worked perfectly for us. I built it into the wall and it's sturdy but still comfortable.

I've a question for those with Murphy beds - do they actually save that much room? Don't you have to leave the same amount of space unused so that you have room to lower/unfold the bed?

I'm intrigued by them since I've got a guest room that is rarely used and would like to put it to more productive use, but also want to have a guest bed for the occasional visitor.

You can always move a couch or a desk to fold it down…..you don't have to leave the area in front of it open at all times….

Some even have a desk built in that just goes under the bed when folded down

You absolutely can put something in its space. Say you had a peloton or something.

Then twice a year when you have a guest, you move it out of the way/up against a wall, put down bed, and your guest has a place to sleep. It's a little bit of effort, but the trade off is, you had the exercise bike set up the other 50 weeks of the year.

The alternative is leave the largely unused bed down full time, and now you have no spot for that exercise bike or whatever it may be.

\Music equipment, homework/study desk for kids, any number of different things that could be set up, and simply moved when a guest comes over.

Thanks again for the input and examples. Definitely seems like something I'd like to put on the near term to do list. I wanted to do this ever since we put together our guest room and knew it was essentially a waste of space.

Would anyone be interested in a Murphy bed project? Free in the Katy area. Bed size is a full. I bought it to fix and then life got in the way. I ended up moving and no longer need it. Would need some wood pieces replaced, maybe new trim, and paint. Pictures from when I got it and how it sits now.
