Am I Going to Kill Myself?

The previous owner of my home installed a Ring doorbell. To disconnect the old-school doorbell they just cut the wires for the old doorbell, tucked them back into the old doorbell, and reattached the old doorbell to the wall. There's a non-functional doorbell on the wall. I would like to reconnect the doorbell. However, to do this, I need to strip the very ends off wire. I have the proper tool because an electrician forgot it at my house and never came back for it. The wires are live. I think I remember that doorbell wires are low voltage? Do I need to turn off a breaker or something before I strip the end of the wires so that I don't die?

I know it would be best to turn off the breaker, but I don't know which breaker controls the doorbell.

You will not kill yourself, its 24V. Typically there is a transformer somewhere that converts 110 to 24 for it. But I have seen cheap builders do stupid things like tie it to the 24V power for the AC thermostat and if you short the doorbell it pops the fuse in the air handler and poof not AC until you replace the fuse.

doorbell voltage is 16-24vac. You'll be fine either way.

If you touch the two wires together, it should ring the doorbell.

It's not the voltage that kills you. It's the amperes.

Pull the two wires apart six inches or so, then use the stripper. Only working with one wire at a time and not contacting the other wire will keep you from getting shocked.
You can also just shut off all the power to the house. Additionally, there is usually a step down up in the attic that changes the voltage from 110 down to doorbell voltage. Google image it, go in the attic and unplug it.

Or sometimes in a box behind the doorbell chime.

They also make a hardwired Ring doorbell that runs off of this voltage so you don't have to mess with batteries.

Why are you doing this? Did you recently get divorced?

Also, depending on the ring doorbell installed, it may have its own chime. Did they replace the old school one or just leave in place? The original doorbell won't work with a Ring chime, and some Ring doorbells don't work with the old chime.

Just in case, I just wanted to say I'll miss your posts if you die. Maybe not a whole lot…. But definitely a little.

No. I'm handy and have all the tools. My husband hires people to do stuff.

I wish he was handy and could build stuff BUT he is a good husband and father, and a great provider so I won't ditch him.

Check the batteries in your smoke detector.
