Think the engineer must have thought we have a battle tank on the 2nd floor.

Honestly it's smart. I'm dealing with a nightmare right now because of a homeowner wanting to remove a load bearing wall. They had an unpermitted remodel upstairs and it's made the standard lvl beam difficult to work with. Just got quotes on steel for the same thing....

Ya this is the two steel beams with lvl between them.

that is thiccc. Plans to put a cast iron tub right above it?

Sometimes it is cheaper and quicker to specify a beam that is the correct depth and a common size, even if it is overkill, than to custom order one.

Or it's designed for deflection. A beam can be plenty strong but deflect to much which gives the impression of weakness. You want the second floor to feel solid.

Oh ya definitely not complaining about it, just think its comical that beam is going in our ceiling.

We had a quote from a different contractor that was 3X as much and was only using LVL.

It reduces the depth of the beam. Usually done the other way around, but still works.

I've never regretted over building something.

If it is worth doing, it is worth overdoing.

If possible, take a few pics of the crew lifting and installing. I am curious how they will tackle it.

Have lots of video but these are the pics.

Now I see why steel was used. Point load in the middle.

Getting ready for 2nd beam.

Also not an LVL in the middle. That's there so they can fasten the ceiling joists to the beam to give it a side loading.

What was the length of the span?

We needed to bridge a 21' space give or take. Engineer estimated we'd need a W45, but it caused some issue with fitting into the space. loadbearingwallremoval (lol, that's all the do) job manager said it was overkill and W26 was all that's needed. Funny because they both calculated loads. If LVL I believe 3x 18" tall were needed.

I beam was 10-12" tall.

I looked at loading table / weight and made the call to size up to W33.

I'll let you know if it fails.

No regular lumber attached to beam, lvl running between the two steel beams.

Longer span is 24', not sure on the smaller span. I'll measure when they are done welding.

Might double check them on it, because that looks like normal dimensional lumber to me, not an lvl. Look at your pic where the board is split already.

They hadn't put the lvl up in the pictures I posted. The lvl is spanning from one steel beam to the other steel beam.

I'm not sure what you are referring to.

Can't wait to see more pics.

If we buy my parent's current home from them, we will have to do this to open up the kitchen to the living room.

Now this makes sense why Braxton texted this to Jamie and I.

Really like that change in openness of the space!
