The last 2 times I have used my generator for extended outages, I've had issues keeping it running on ethanol free gasoline. Both times it died after running normally for a period of time (3 days the first time, and about 24 hours the next). Both times I couldn't get it to restart on gas, but it would run fine using propane. After the main power came back on the 1st time, I cleaned the carb and replaced the fuel filter. This seemed to solve the issue and it was running fine on both gas and propane. This time, I did neither, but gave the battery a good charge and it started running on gas again. Could a bad battery cause this? I'm going to get a new one any way, but wondering if there is other preventative maintenance I should do to hopefully not run into this situation the next time I need the unit to run for multiple days.

I'm running the wgen7500DF by Westinghouse. I would love to just run it on propane and not worry about gas, but it kicks out more power and runs longer between refueling on gasoline.

When you replaced the fuel filter did you notice if it was clogged? Inspect your fuel tanks. Maybe they are dirty. I would also check the spark plug if you haven't already.

I don't think it would be the battery. When it died and you couldn't restart it on gas did you try pull starting it? Did you use the push button start for propane? If so then that would eliminate the battery.

How much are you running with it? When it's on propane are you tripping breakers and having to go back to deal with it or do you have some home systems that it cannot run when de-rated on propane?

Personally I'm looking to go the propane route and willing to simply buy a larger unit and store the fuel. I'm unwilling to deal with the issues that gasoline presents with infrequent use.

I'm not familiar with that particular generator, but I bet it has a fuel cut-off solenoid on the carburetor fuel bowl. If there is one there, when it is energized, it allows the gasoline to flow to the carb. When de-energized, it shuts the flow off.

Maybe your battery is losing charge while it is running and it is causing the solenoid to shut the gasoline supply off?

IDK...just throwing that out there as a possibility.

FYI the Westinghouse and Duromax gens are made at the same factory. There are well known problems with the factory spark plugs and the manufacturers state to change out to an NGK plug.

This might help you based on what I've seen.

Specifically NGK BPR6ES (7131)

I ordered a pack of 4 and run them in everything - power washer, lawn mower, generator

Sorry I haven't responded previously. I really do think it was the battery. I ordered a new one, installed it, and it fired right up using the electric start. I didn't replace any other parts. Guess that's just going to be part of my annual maintenance routine getting ready for hurricane season. Fortunately, batteries are cheap ($30+/-).

Why not just put it on a smart float charger (Battery Tender, Jr. or similar) year round?

I normally have it plugged in using the charger that came with the generator, but maybe I need to look at a getting something better.
