We had new windows put in five years ago. They are impact windows. Two windows on one side of my house that gets a lot of sun have some damage to the caulk. The rest of the windows are doing great. Last thing I need is water coming in with a bad storm. I'm planning on doing this myself. What kind of caulk would you recommend and should I tear out as much of the old caulk as possible before filling the gaps? As always, I appreciate the help.

I'd clean out all of the old caulk and then use some Sika or some PL Door and Window caulk.

Yes, tear out as much as you can.

Use OSI Quad Max - you can get it at big box stores.

Also NP or any other urethane caulk will work well.

If the gap is large, pick up some caulk saver at the big box store.

Stuff it into the big gaps. It'll save your caulk.

Personally I love the Sherwin Williams caulk that's the in red tube. It's most forgiving for the person who doesn't caulk everyday.

I also need to do this at my house, but curious whether all 4 edges should be caulked. Is there a need to leave the bottom and/or top uncaulked on the outside to let water drain away?

Did the job yesterday. The tool recommendations made all of the difference. I also used some old door insulation to stuff behind the large gaps or it would have never filled in. I was surprised that the osi quad max sealant was still soft to the touch today. Not sure if it's the heat or just takes a while to fully cure. Very happy with it though. Pretty easy project.
