AC got to where it wasn't keeping up even in mild temperature.

Has been happening a few days. Called out a tech and he showed me him testing and identified a coolant leak in the coil. It's a York system and only a few years old. He quoted me the following after he gets a chance to call manufacturer and see if any warranty is available.

Warranty available for parts ~ $1800 for labor and charging

No warrants and buy parts ~$3600-$4000

Does this seem crazy or par for the course?

I thought new HVACS had ten year warranty's. It should be zero cost.

Manufacturers warranty does not cover labor.

I had my coil replaced within the first five years. I guess I did pay maybe a few hundred dollars. This was done in 2019.

Replaced a couple evap coils in the last few years both out of warranty and want to say they were each about your "under warranty" cost (maybe even less). My units are Carrier and replaced with OEM or equivalent. I'm sure parts and Freon have gone up since doing mine but 3-4k sounds high.

EDIT to add replacements were about $2k so a little above OP under warranty estimate.

OP, I paid $950 for a coil replacement labor-only 5 years ago. Ruud system. Just for a datapoint. Seems 1,800 isn't unreasonable - everything else has doubled in cost

Had two replaced last summer (over 10 years old, so no warranty). Spent about $2200 on each.

I got a similar quote last month. Ended up buying a whole new unit instead.

Had my coil replaced last year in a 4 ton variable speed unit. System is ~13 years old, so out of warranty, but everything else was good. One shop was pushing me to replace the unit ($6.5k when I bought it 13 yrs ago) with a $14k unit that was basically the same thing, or gave me a $4k quote to replace the coil.

Went with another guy that I know and trust for $3k. So your pricing seems to be in line.

Long story short, original installer never submitted warranty info to manufacturer. Current tech was able to get it covered by warranty anyway and is headed to pick up the coil. Hope to get it installed tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice! Lesson learned, don't trust that someone else will do their job.

If you are in the Houston area we would be glad to help you or give you an estimate...those numbers seem a little high....but you should have at least a 5 year warranty on the equipment.
