Son moved out so mama is renovating upstairs bathrooms to go with the new media room I just set up. She asked to change out the bathroom mirror and vanity light….and this is the bull**** I find. Man I wish I could go back in time and find this electrician and kick him square in the nuts.

I know I should just cut out some sheet rock and fix this…… but dang….mama's projects always turn into my projects. Somebody tell me to just put a new vanity light over this and call it day please LOL!

I can't get an idea of size but can you put a round old work box in that hole and make the connections in that instead? Hell, put a double gang old work box, or a triple gang, whatever it takes. I don't like it and I wouldn't leave it if it were me.

It's more than a 1/4" gap so it's a code violation. And looks like hell. And suggests the installer saw it on a Friday at 3:15 and said F it.

As a DIY-guy, that looks pretty crappy and if I encountered that I'd recognize that it may need to be addressed.

But as a non-electrician, what is the danger/risk?

ETA: Reminds me of a late-1960s home that we bought and lived in a couple of decades ago. The basement was "finished". I decided to paint the paneling in the basement.

When I went to remove the outlet and lightswitch covers prior to painting, I found that the outlets and switches were "mounted" only via the screw connecting the covers to the outlet/switch. So, when I removed the covers, the outlet/switch "fell" inside the cavity/space between the paneling and the basement's concrete wall.

You forgot the part where he cursed the drywaller for creating whatever situation made the box so far in there,... whether or not it was actually their fault.

Guy that built my last house... I call him One Nail. He never used two of one would suffice

House was 18 months old when I moved in. A few years later I'm repainting... Bathroom vanity was held in place with a single drywall screw and a paint stir stick. The remnants of a scored X marked where they just punched the sheetrock. No box present.

In the master one of the vanity lights had a double stud behind it.

I feel your pain.

Use a non metallic round electrical box extender and call it a day.
