Beautiful new shower, water coming out of the shower head in tub fill mode.

Did not DIY (though I am feeling like I should have...)

Moen system.

I have ideas for how I would fix it but don't want to pollute the hive mind with them just yet...

Like most of my projects, I'd generally start by cussing. Have you tried that?

If it was an old build I'd suggest taking out and cleaning the diverter valve. Since this is new build there is probably debris somewhere in the line causing water to divert up to the shower, or there is something causing too much pressure somewhere (like too small a fitting) so water bypasses the tub and goes up to the shower. Removing and cleaning the diverter valve may help with debris.
Unfortunately, I doubt either is cheap or easy.
Can you get access to the pipes from the wall opposite the shower head that isn't tiled?

Can access wall behind shower thankfully. Hopefully just debris.

Try replacing the spout/diverter part. It is probably partially closed. Should be expensive. Usually fairly simple. Only a couple ways they go on.

Inexpensive, OP.

That's the hope, I am hoping they do not have to tear into the wall.

Does the water come out fine at the spout? If so, you may have some sort of clog between the valve and the shower head. I have dealt with this issue before, and it is usually a matter of trying different things until something works. It was especially bad after I had my water heater replaced. Here are some things that I have tried before:

  • Turn off the water, remove the valve, then turn the water back on for 30 seconds or a minute. The water will shoot out uncontrollably through the missing valve area, but that will often flush stuff out of there.
  • Remove the shower head and blow compressed air from the top to try to dislodge any debris
  • Plug up the spout at the bottom and pour vinegar or CLR from the top where the shower head is. This will hopefully break down any debris or hard water deposits that are clogging the pipe.

Thanks a lot, all the plumbing is new so I am hoping a stuck diverter or some other gunk. Plumber had trouble with a leaking cartridge as well so it could be related to that.

If it's new plumbing, then it could be an installation issue. I have old galvanized pipes and hard water (Houston), which is the cause of my problems.

Usually it is the diverter. Should not be a hard fix.

Master plumber came out, I drew a sketch up of the issue. Note the instructions highlighted in yellow and the measurements boxed in red. Currently have all the green shown as pex and the brown as copper. Plumber stated that tub spout should be a straight run of copper from valve to tub and that the valves are not normally placed so high.

They are going to bust out the drywall from the other side and replace the pex/copper combo with straight copper.

Would be a pita considering the money we've got in this. Hoping it does not come to that.
