Help me with wood ID.

Is this rough sawn red oak? Looks like it but I'm not experienced enough to know by looking at it.

Obligatory:

I do feel like for Red Oak, you'd see more splitting. Could it be Ash? I'm pretty inexperienced with weathered wood like that.

I would guess that it is fir.

Appreciate the replies.

Is there a way for me to know the wood species if I can feel the end grain or rudimentary hardness test?

Can you run it through a planer on one face to remove the weathering?

Not before buying it…I am willing to take the chance cause I have the chance to buy this very cheap and run it though my planer.

Worst case…it's not red oak and it's ash or fir as some others have suggested, it's still better and cheaper than store bought pine. Way cheaper than any store bought hardwood.

There's an iphone app that has magnified identifiers if you have a jeweler's loupe or care that much. I think that is ash, but just an educated guess. Could be fir.

Ash vs oak?? Similar workability and finish??

Oak takes a stain better and ironically handles moisture better. Ash is better for interior from what I've read because it rots and attracts insects more than oak. Other than that, they are both great.

Well did I get lucky??

Looks like red oak to me but I've worked with it only once before nearly a decade ago. Any positive ID would be great!

Regardless, I'll be going back to this place for more tomorrow. I got 160-bf for $60

I think it's white oak.

Lighting was different in the shop. Has a much more red hue in hand than the picture.

Either red or white, it is a heck of a deal for rough sawn oak

A photo of White/Red end cuts here pushes me out on a limb to say consider White Oak as well, even though the lighter coloring, et al. supports Red Oak all the way.
Me thinks you struck gold.

What's the project, again?

No specific project yet. Saw the opportunity and couldn't pass it up.

Going back for another load tomorrow. Works out to about $0.38/bf

Red oak.

I was looking at the end grain instead of color. Regardless, thats a helluva a steal. I would buy it all at that price. It looks like it's uniform width X thickness. Maybe it was originally destined for a trailer floor?

I think that's red oak. The red oak has little open pores on the end grain that are closed on white oak.

benthegoodag is on point about the porosity of red oak vs while oak. Visually I've seen massive overlap in color and character between the two. The best way to tell is take a bigger splinter and put one end in a cup of water and blow like a straw. If it bubbles its red oak.

Its really obvious when you hammer dowels into holes with glue. Red oak will let the glue work up the dowel and out the side of the dowel. White oak wont do that.
