Has anyone on the HI board installed a chair lift or elevator in a 2 story residence? Would be to accommodate an aging parent.
Pros/cons and do/don't for either solution?
Located in Houston area.
Thanks in advance

My elderly new neighbors just finished a new retirement home designed for an elevator that's been ordered. I don't know the details of the purchase but can ask. The husband just had spine surgery and they only have two straight line steep stairs on both sides to large porches so they can be slippery when wet. To not have a middle landing is not well thought out and they need to invest in a Generac with the sketchy electricity provider.

There is an elevator guy on the job board. Hit him up.

And the chair lifts will always remind me of Gremlins.

Space, cost, and resale is important. Can an elevator be put in a spot where it fits and makes sense for future owners. I put in a chair lift with it's own chair. I would have preferred a lift with a platform for a wheelchair but didn't have the space below or on top. So had to go with a lift on rails bolted to one side of the stairs. The downside is that you need a separate wheelchair for the upstairs but it doesn't need to be fancy. My preference would have been elevator, but not possible in a 30s house.

Thanks for the replies. I will search job board too.
As far as space we have a front and back staircase. Initial thought is to close in back staircase with elevator/lift. Then capture the space under that stair case as an expanded closet/storage. I have zero concept on prices for lifts/elevators.

Someone mentioned resale - my thinking is if done properly it could be an improvement that adds value and set house apart from others.

Thinking you are the right path from handicap designs past.
One' health can progress quickly from being able to transfer to a lift-chair to NOT & wheelchair only.

Even the sports-healthy have backup plans, spaces in case of an auto/other accident surprise and the older set prefer the elevators whose prices have come down .. if not fancy.

Some of the elite building new will install an elevator, some just for "showing off" to friends.

Agree on elevator if possible. I have to imagine it would be easier for them to just go into an elevator vs. dealing with a chair lift. Especially if they're trying to take anything up or down the stairs.

And agree it will help with resale. My aunt lives in a townhome in Tampa and they use theirs all the time just for stuff. Traveling? Throw the full suitcases in there and send to the first floor, etc.
