So, my dishwasher is old and starting to break down. Any brands / models to recommend? Any brands / models to avoid? No real set budget.

My preference is Frigidaire

Avoid GE

the ONLY time we got rid of a Kitchen-Aid (always in their top 3 selections) was when they had the "toy" garbage disposers instead of the SOP filters one rinses out from time-time. The interior design and longetivity is planning/thinking and corrosion superiority to even Consumer Reports love of German Bosch. If some say Bosch mechanics/"engines" last longer, I can prove otherwise. USA Kitchen-Aid.

Am old enough to have owned briefly all the other brands and in-the-day only bought Whirlpool/Maytag b/c the top/honest repairmen in this small college town advised no others would pay for warranty repairs. Now a larger town, this has changed for the better.

UPDATE: our 9.5yo Bosch cheap racks have tines rusting, then falling off ... 2 more moved into trash this week
compare to KitchenAid racks from 3 DW past still OK when used inside DW 2 and the eatingware basket inside DW 1 (the Bosch).

Bosch with Crystal Dry. It really does dry your plastics.

Bosch 800 series. YWIA.

Installed one in every house I've lived in. Really should have bought a cheapo before selling and moved the Bosch with me each time. Alas, new owners got the best dishwasher on the market thanks to me.

Another recommendation for Bosch. I replaced ours with a new Bosch, and when my moms went out I got a Bosch installed for her also. They are very quiet, and dishes come out as clean as can be.

Costco has the Bosch 800 series for $150 off with free install and haul away right now, ends today I think.

Hang on - I speak Vaughn

"I've used a lot of Kitchen-Aid, and the only negative I've had is when they used a sub-standard garbage disposal design. Otherwise, they're highly rated and designed to last. Some people will tell you that German made equipment, like Bosch, is the best, but Kitchen-Aid is the American made equipment from a better time.

I've owned other brands. The only reason I would buy Whirlpool/Maytag is because our local repairman had better luck with their warranty program. As our town has grown, it has been easier to warranty other brands."

So, I just checked. Your Costco does. Poverty Costco in College Station has the 100 and 300 only. Will need to go to Lowe's if I want the 800.

I wasn't at a physical Costco, this is online.

We went with costco direct and got a Bosch For ours, it wasn't free installation, but free delivery, so check what your specific Costco offers.
Some of the low dishwasher reviews are because the customer was mad at Costco for not installing it, not necessarily something bad about the dishwasher.

Had a KitchenAid forever, new one is a Whirlpool. From my research same mechanicals, slightly different layouts. Bosch was out of stock for months at the time.

How many lines into a TGI Vaughan post do most of yall get before you say "wait… this must be a TGI Vaughan post."?

And I'm just giving you a hard time, TGI Vaughan… your knowledge is incredibly helpful!

House we just moved into has a Kitchen Aid. It's ok, the Fisher & Paykel we had at our old house was better. Quieter and dried the dishes better.

I'd just iterate that if going Bosch make sure you do go the 800 series route. The lower ones don't have heating elements and try various gimmicks but are notorious for not getting your dishes dry.

We also have a kitchen aid. It's fine super quiet. Doesn't dry dishes very well even on extended dry

I have a Bosch Ascenta, we bought it about 3 years ago during COVID when supply chain was not the best and it took forever to get here.

It sucks. It currently wont start a cycle and the Sanitize light is flashing, which is some kind of an error code because this one doesnt have a digital display. Looked at the manual and it didnt have error code key, so I have no idea what's wrong with it.

Sucks. 3 years old. Dont get the cheaper ones.

I agree with this.

I'm good with my kitchen aid, but the Miele that was in my house when I bought it was incredible....right up until the control board died.

So it's down to -
Bosch 800 series ($1200 @ Lowe's)
KitchenAid Freeflex ($900 @ Lowe's)
LG Quadwash ($950 @ Lowe's) we have an LG range and fridge that are smart, and same app
bam02

We have all LG appliances and are generally very happy with the dishwasher. Does a great job cleaning, but it also doesn't have a heating element so doesn't dry that well.

I've never felt like the smart/wifi features were very useful.

Don't get a GE GDF535PSR6SS. I used one for the last week and it is not good.

It's loud, plastic, and so flimsy it feels like a kid's toy kitchen.

Actually, he's a really helpful poster and well-regarded, myself included. But even he has laughed at his own posting style at times.

Agreed! I probably wouldn't have posted that ribbing, but I remembered somebody else giving him a hard time and him being a really good sport about it so I thought it would be well received.

I got a Bosch back in 2018 or 2019 to replace a piece of junk GE. It's an 800 series, but it doesn't have the drying crystal thing.

I don't like it. It's always had an odor problem (partly due to the installation, I think). Sometimes the odor is so bad, I have to run it just to get rid of the stink. . And the last few months, I've noticed it's not getting my dishes as clean as it used to.

Seven or eight dishwashers (all different brands) and I've never had a problem with odor, much less one that stinks this bad.
