Long story short, toilet in half bath has a crack and needs replacing. House is 20 years old so finding exact toilet or tank seems out of task. Its a pretty basic American Standard toilet. Will a "generic" tank replacement work? What should I look for to make sure they're compatible? Should I just say screw it and replace the entire toilet?

Thanks in advance.

Just replace the whole thing. I think the fitment is pretty standard in most cases. However, the color might be off between the two pieces. Replacing a toilet is pretty darn simple anyway so just get a new one.

Agree just replace the whole thing. You can get the nicest one Lowe's has under 300$ last time i checked.

Agree with everyone else. Replace the whole thing. Got one that is taller and flushes better. Much happier

Call American Standard and see if they can figure it out with you. When I was in the remodel business I had the same issue. I used the printed numbers on the back of the tank and we were able to identify the toilet. Then, I purchased one off Amazon and it worked perfectly. The little effort is worth not having to replace the toilet! Good luck.

I used to work at a plumbing supply house for 4 years. Please replace the entire toilet. They are easy enough to replace and not worth the effort.

They do not all fit each other and today's tanks are designed differently and not compatible with old bowl. Different water consumption standard, etc…has changed over the years.

Can you find a match? Sure. But again not worth the effort and if you get it wrong you either wasted money, time or if you force it to work, overtime can possibly leak and flood your house.

You can get a standard toilet from a plumbing supply house for like $150 or so and they are easy to install yourself. I've installed all mine.

At 20 years old Just replace it
It will eventually pay for itself in water savings as you probably have a 1.6 gpf now so a new one uses 20% less water.

I have installed numerous of these and everyone has always loved the chair height, the resistance to clogging and the price.

Have installed toilets that are 3-5x the price that perform the same or worse

I'll agree with OlRock on this one.

I don't like the newer 1.28 Gallon ones but that is personal preference and one that may not be popular.

The testing standards for flushing poop were revised within past 20 years to more closely mimic the real thing.

As a result new low flow models perform better than old low flow models.

Get a new toilet. Don't mismatch.
