Wanted to crowd source some information here.

We are having a few steel planters built for us and we were told to go with regular steel vs corten as corten was 3.5 times more expensive per sheet. We are going to build these out of 3/8" steel so if I use regular steel for these planters, how long should I expect these to last? These will be 4' x 8' at 2' high

The the radio show Garden Success, KAMU-FM 90.9FM, Dr Richter shared the best metal planter for such as this, remembering lifetime. Email him or phone during Thurs noon show to get the brand.

What you've been told sounds fishy and as if there's only 2 choices.
When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail ... or 3/8" steel

I build these all the time. (I should say, I design them & tell people "build this here planter like this and I'll pay you for it")

We only use 1/4" steel on planters that are 2' tall.... regular steel not Corten. 3'-4' tall we bump up to 3/8".

*Install 2" square tube posts every 6', set in concrete 12" deep. You can anchor into foundation if that works.

*Run a 2" square tube or angle iron railing between the posts & weld the plate to it. This will prevent warping.

*Install gravel the bottom 6" of your planter & next to the steel for drainage. Extend a French Drain from the bottom of the planter out into the lawn & terminate the pipe with a pop-up drainage emitter. This will prevent your planter from becoming a pond & keep moisture off the steel.

I've had planters in the ground for 15 years built in this manner.

I've had clients had us primer & waterproof the inside of the planter to prevent rust. I would assume it helps, but I haven't had any problems with not doing it either.

At the corners, do you tack weld or do a continuous weld top to bottom?

Or just leave them?

I would think a continuous weld ground smooth would look the best but probably costs some more.

We tack weld joints on the inside of the planters so they aren't seen from the outside. Here's a pic of a planter recently built.
