Looking for opinions, recommendations, and learnings about whole home water filtration systems. We live in McKinney and are on city water, and my wife is bugging me about adding a filter to our kitchen sink. Depending on cost, I think I would rather just go with a whole-home system.

When we built our home, we installed a HALO whole home water filtration system. We have been very satisfied with this system. If you decide to install a whole home water filtration system, I would recommend you split the water line where it comes into your house. You should install one line to feed your outdoor hydrants which does not run through the filtration system and the second line which feeds water throughout the interior of your home.

We have a Springwell Well/Iron Filter System in addition to UV Light. Have been pleased overall with the performance and ease to operate/maintain.

We are in McKinney as well, we had a whole home water system installed by Paragon Water. No issues so far.

I would call these folks.

If you send a sample/test results, they can help with what your options are.

Glad you posted this. We've had an Aquasana countertop unit for 20 years. It's finally failed so looking at options.

Can you guys share the total installed cost of a whole house water filtration system? I got a quote from one plumber for $4800 for a Watts E Treat with pre-filter. An online search has others that are much less expensive (excluding installation).

Just looked up what we paid to Paragon Water, $4225 total. My wife did all the research when we were looking to have a system installed, from what I recall Paragon's warranty is pretty extensive. All I have to do is restock the salt in the system on a quarterly basis.

This works well https://www.freedrinkingwater.com/wts-max-20.htm. Hire a plumber to install before your softener.

Would ask a lot of questions here = our go-to source forever in Aggieland
https://www.culligan.com/locations/tx/dallas/water-filtration

FYI: in Aggieland, the water contains sodium that is best removed for 1. personal health & blood pressure, 2. for all gardening in this clay based soil. The latter filter may be a budget buster.

I have a friend who loves the Aquasana whole home system she had installed, this is in Brenham and the water always smells like Lake Somerville

We did the Springwell whole home and salt based water softener system (4-6 bathrooms) including the UV system. Total cost was $3,501.23 purchased directly from Springwell in October of 2020. I did the install myself with mostly CPVC.

Like Mission Ranch AG said, we split the water line and re-fed our existing hose bibs/hydrants so that they were fed with non-filtered/softened water.

In addition to that, we did the Waterdrop 3 stage RO system under the kitchen sink. I'm really not a water drinker but damn our water tastes good. I've been happy with the whole setup.

Filter replacement costs kind of suck in addition to the salt for the softener but both our kids have eczema so it seems to help.

We have been on well water since we built the house in 2015. A few years ago we started getting red scaley looking "goop" for lack of a better term in our cold water lines. Like a rusty sludge. We had our water tested and found we had a ton of iron and manganese in the well water.

I installed an iSpring 3 Stage whole home filter that uses a 5 micron sediment filter, a carbon filter, and a special iron/manganese filter. These are all 20" x 4" filters in the big blue cans. Water comes out looking and tasting like Evian or Fiji. I do use a 50 micron spin down filter upstream just to catch some of the larger stuff. Did not do UV or any kind of softener.

The one main drawback I see is we use alot of water so I tend to have to change the filters out once every 4-6months.

My suggestions:
- If you can, and there is a split, install it just on the in-home outlets. My grass doesnt need Fiji water.. but it gets it. My pressure tank is in the garage. The house line leaves the tank and heads straight into the finished wall of the garage so that location made the most sense.
- Install a bypass around the whole filter system or whatever you install. That way if you have an issue or need to swap filters you can bypass and fix whatever.
- Install pressure gauges upstream and downstream of the filters. Other than lower water pressure, a large differential reading between the two gauges is a good indication that the filters need replacing.
- Install a pre-filter if you have larger sediment. 50-100 micron. Helps the larger filters last longer. They make these with automatic flush scrapers so you just need to pipe the outlet somewhere outside the house.
- Make sure whatever system you get provides enough flowrate for your house. I went with a 1" setup and the iSpring filters are rated to 15GPM. If I am running the dishwasher, clothes washer, and tub/shower at the same time I will choke it out so I just have to be aware of that.
