I can't post pics, but there are links below. Does this flashing installation look right? I thought maybe the builder should have overlapped the top edge of this flashing with shingles to keep water from getting under the flashing.

Does it go under the shingles at all? If not, it needs to. I've seen these before as "after the fact" fixes for leaks that popped up.

It really needs to go under the shingles and they could slap some weathered wood accessory paint on it while they are there.

The caveat to this is that I don't know it's purpose. You have flashing and counter flashing on your sidewalls of the front porch there already.

Thanks Ben!

I can't really tell if it goes under the shingles without climbing up there, but I noticed that another house of the same model does have shingles overlapping and they did paint it to match the roof.

Would this be a relatively simple fix for a roofer? Just lifting up some shingles and putting a few more to cover it from the top?

Well, if it's nailed down then it has to be pulled off and placed under the shingles because it would be too short to go under the course above. It's probably under there a little bit. Has it given you any issue? Where are you located (generally)?

I'm not digging the way the roofer nailed through the flashing on top of the shingle. I'd fail that on inspection.

We call those dead valleys and they're big leakers if there is any problem at all. Keep a close eye on them if you ever get any rain

Sorry but you'll need to get someone on the roof to photo a shot from roof ridge into/onto how the rainwater hits the vertical chimney ... where a criket of some sort should be to illustrate the whole enchilada "in play" here.

Otherwise the flashing doesn't make as much sense as SOP it should.

That said, YES all flashing kin to this always goes UNDER shingles or something else flashing/et al.
ELSE water/runoff WILL = leaks, sooner or later.

See these a ton on gables above the front door coming out with valleys that slope into the side of the wall on both sides.

Agree, it looks like a dead valley..those do need pans added to prevent leaks... and do need to see photos of the walls on each side where the roof meets each wall.

That looks like **** and will absolutely leak. It should definitely be lapped under the shingles. Otherwise water will just run underneath it. Don't buy any talk about sealant either. Sealant doesn't last as long as properly layering waterproofing materials. That roofer needs to fix that the flashing and replace the shingles they nailed it through.
