Both hot water heaters (gas) stopped working at the exact same time

We all took showers last night in different bathrooms fed by different gas hot water heaters and the water was plenty hot.

This morning, none of our bathrooms have hot water. Other gas appliances work fine, so it's not the gas supply. What could cause both hot water heaters to go out at the same time? Any ideas? Thanks.

Tankless or tank?
Electrical surge fry the control boards?
Are they bluetooth/wifi enabled/app controlled, and something go wrong there?

Did you look to see if you just had a brief gas outage and the pilot lights went out?

Sounds like either a power surge and bed a reset or gas outage and the pilot lights went out, depending on if they are good or electric.

I was in a rush to get out the door this morning, but will check when I get home. I have my fingers crossed that all I need to do is re-light both pilot lights. This seems most likely to me. Unless they are somehow interconnected (which I doubt), a gas outage/pilot shutoff is about the only thing that makes sense.

To the first poster: they are not Bluetooth or app enabled or anything like that. Both have tanks. There was no electrical outage or power surge as far as I can tell, and I have a whole home surge protector.

Are they in the attic by chance? I have two in the attic and one lost the pilot at some point yesterday. I was able to easily relight it this morning. My theory is that it was so hot in the attic that the temperature differential across the thermocouple wasn't strong enough. Never seen this before though.

Why does it matter if the water is already hot?

If they both went out it's gotta be a common problem. Fuel or oxygen. Unlikely they both had an electronic problem at the same time.

Sorry I kept you hanging. Both pilot lights were out. Not sure of the reason, but it hasn't happened again. All good now.

Our old unit was the in the attic. It was gas and had a safety shutoff if the ambient temperature gets above a certain level. During August, it could reach that level.

Indeed & thank you for putting a finer point on his mystery.
