It's about time we replace two leaky toilets. What is a good brand to look for? I'm thinking we'd like self close lids, a taller one for the master and shorter version for kids bathroom.
Anything else I'm missing?

If you've got a smartass comment, Id obviously love to hear that also. Thanks!

Ha! Anything besides an $800 toilet?!? I didn't even know this was a thing. What makes them so nice? Is the one piece toilet now the thing? They look so ugly, there's no way the wife will go with one of them. Thanks for the recs!

Take a look at the Entrada or Drake, of course single piece will be much more expensive than separate tank

We installed Toto Drake at our prior house. Wish we had them in this house. I installed a Kohler Highline chair height in the pool bath a couple years ago(from Lowe's) and have had no issues. I think it was $200..

If your toilets are old and still use a real amount of water to flush, replace the internals for $20 and put a new seat on it. New toilets use half the water of old toilets and they work about half as well.

I agree that you can probably fix your toilets with new kits. If you do replace, use the Toto Drake. You mentioned comfort height in the master and a standard height in the children's bath. I would use comfort height in both and buy a short stool for the children. We have had comfort height toilets since before we had children.

Because you mentioned kids, you might want to look at a different Toto model, or another brand with a smooth side. Cleaning is so much easier. We have Icera.

Makes zero sense. This is the c***per in your master bathroom. Who cares what it looks like? This is 110% function and 0% looks.

I didn't know Toto was such a thing.

We put in American Standard smooth side ones with a remodel that we like a lot. We've also had Gerber ones which were universally hated in the house. Just an odd bowl shape that caused flushing and cleaning issues.

Here at home a couple of bathrooms have Totos from within the past 5 years, the other two are American Standard from the 1950s in fun colors. The kids get the 5 gallon/flush ones and haven't been able to clog them up yet!

Really best to go out of state and buy your toilets.

Back in 2009, Texas adopted to reduce the water usage per flus to 1.2 gallons per flush. That was from 1.6 gallons per flush. The only other state to do that was California. Now they have toilets down to 1.0 gallons per flush but I think 1.2 is the max in Texas. so you are crapping basically in a cup of water, and you are have 33% less water to work with.

We can save water on irrigation possibly, but don't go after the toilets. Let people's cr*p get out of here. Louisiana sells toilets with the 1.6 gallons per flush. You will have to order them to be delivered to their stores in Louisiana, and have them ready for pickup, and then drive to Louisiana to pick them up.

So yes, I am recommending bootleg toilets.

And get the pressure-lite toilets by Kohler. the Kohler Highline.

Toto is ok. They do the job. I have two new ones from Louisiana, both with the 1.6 gpf rate.

But the Kohler Highline pressure-assist kicks its but. It will suck your but down the toilet if you are not careful. It is a similar design as the toilets at Bucky's.

Maybe, but a good strong toilet affects your quality of life. I'd argue that it can mess with your mental health.

You don't want to have a party, and somebody dumps a big load and stuffs your undersized 1.0 gpf toilet, and then people can't take a leak after drinking your frozen Margaritas.

Every once in a while (once per 2-3 years), I replace all the guts (bolts, gaskets, ballcock, etc) in all the toilets in my house.

Now that I think about it, it's probably time to do it again.

But, a few weeks after the last time I did it (with parts (bolts, gaskets, etc) from Home Depot), I happened to lift the lid of a tank and saw that the heads of the bolts were rusting.

I thought those bolts were brass, but I guess they're only brass plated? I will probably check into that (if brass bolts are available). I suspect I nicked the slot in the bolt heads with my screwdriver. Maybe I'll try not to use a screwdriver at all next time and just tighten the nuts from below.

Anyhow, the main motivation for my post is that I wondered about 1-piece toilets, such that there would be no bolts to rust and fewer gaskets to mess with.

Any suggestions on whether 1-piece toilets are preferable?

As someone said above, Texas and California are regulated to 1.28 gal flush toilets. You can get the 1.6 gallon flush versions in other states. When we built our house, it crossed my mind; however, I decided to just use the 1.28 Toto Drake. We have been very happy with them and they flush great.

I used a Kohler Highline to replace a standard height to ADA height at our church. It is a nice toilet, but I would not pick it over a toto.

Was it a Koehler highline pressure lite toilet? There are several models, but the pressure lite 1.6 is the best.

You need to get the one with the internal bladder. It is loud but powerful. I have two Toto toilets, and five pressure lite toilets in properties.

The pressure lite is much more powerful, no comparison.

Glacier bay power flush is a beast of a toilet. I also have 5 in properties.

Also check your city/county to see if they offer any rebates. We installed a Kohler Cimarron, one of the WaterSense approved toilets, and submitted the receipt to receive $50 off our next water bill. No issues at all with water flow or clogs and it's a fraction the price of Totos.
