We have a wood-burning fireplace with a gas connection as a starter, and are looking to convert it to fully gas for the ambience, and to avoid the beating that is ashes and wood splitting would every year. Has anyone ever done this, and do we need to be concerned with any safety issues in the flue or dampers? The fireplace guy I'm talking to said no, but I just want to be cautious.

Yes we converted ours. They sell gas log sets. Very easy diy.

80's metal cone wood burning became a hassle, even with free oak droppings from backyard ... list of troubles in rear view mirror upon demand.

Plumber came out to pipe fireplace outside to portable propane tanks, installed a "gas" logs kit.

Had to be replaced years later, so HD here I come to DIY replace.
Nightmare, then OK, then not, then OK for years ....

Hauling increasingly larger propane tanks to be refilled in order to cut down on trips, hassles re-lighting pilot, etc. finally came to The Last Straw when it took 4 hours to light the pilot, no power, no heat Feb 2021 freeze.

Large Propane tank installed by truck delivery, fireplace shop installed no-brainer "gas" logs kit ... pilot ON all winter, never run out of "gas". Where has this been all my life? No more DIY repiars/fill, dirty hands ....
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

I did it a few years ago. I got mine inspected by a sweep first, then cleaned out the space.

Took off the old NG stater and put in the new burner. My log set was the full width of the space and I needed an extra bag of lava rocks. I got a non flued version. My flue stays closed so the heat stays in the room.

I thought I did a write up on it. I'll have to search.
