Looking at different manufacturers for installing a slide gate at the house. I will probably shoot for a solar setup simply for not having to run power, but also so it functions in case of power outage.

Currently looking at in no particular order:

1. Lift Master
2. Chamberlain
3. All-O-Matic
4. Eagle Access Control
5. Door King
6. Viking
7. Ramset
8. Linear

Any brands to shy away from?

I've had good experiences with Liftmaster/Chamberlain products. MyQ is a nice feature and comes in handy.

Personally, I am a fan of US Automatic. They are built better than the Liftmaster (for my swing gate). I like the company because of the warranty on the product, the fact its made in Texas, and the fact that I called them no less than 6 times before purchasing and every person I talked to helped me with questions. No BS. No call centers. One thing they told me on my swing gate is that they use the same board for single or dual gates so if the board ever dies and its a single gate, you can just plug into the secondary and keep on trucking. I thought that was cool. That may be the case for slides as well.

US Automatic website and manuals seems to be the most competent I have read thus far. Will definitely give them a call. I know you have a swing gate, mind me asking what they charge for this unit? I have a feeling these will be more expensive than the larger commercial companies.

My gate opener was a Ranger HD. It came out to 1700 and change for everything needed to install plus a metal box upgrade, two extra remotes and two plastic keypads because my horses eat them sometimes. I bought from GateCrafters which US Automatic suggested I buy from if I was doing the install. Mine is a weld on application. The installer for my region wanted to charge me 2800 for the opener alone. Not sure why but it was cheaper online. US Automatic said that they warrant their products hands down. It doesn't matter where it came from. If it's theirs they warrant it and it's based on serial or shipping date, I can't recall which.

Here is yours.

By the way, I'm not saying you should get this brand. I don't have long term experience with it but several people on the OB suggested it and several installers like them. The experience with the staff just made me feel better about it. They didn't try to BS or strong arm me with warranties and certified installers or anything like that. It just seemed like a warranty that did what it said without a bunch of strings.

I built a pretty large DIY sliding gate a couple of years ago. I did tons of research, but it was a very fun build and I'm still very happy with how it turned out. Here's a link to my build thread, which includes some lessons learned on the gate on page 2 and opener on page 3: Rolling Driveway Gate

Most contractors use Eagle operators here. I was not impressed - they're loud and I've seen a few of them fail. After looking at several units in the field, I went with a Liftmaster. Their bigger units seem to be pretty nice, and my operator is much quieter, faster, and more feature-packed than those around me. I also like the commonality with my garage door openers, and the app support. The battery in my unit will let it run if there's an outage, but it also has solar panel options (still just powers the battery).

My two cents, the gate design is just as important as the operator. A bad design will lead to early operator failure. I drove around and looked at a lot of gates before I finalized my design, and started to notice some commonalities. A - some contractors like to use a side rail for the rollers to hold up the gate. They are often welded to the gate frames with 2" welds every 8 feet or so. Those 2" welds start to fatigue and fail early, which leads to the frame also bending/fatiguing. It's a good design on paper because it adds some lateral bracing, but crap in reality because of the welds. A 40' gate dependent on a 2" weld is going to fail in windy areas because the wind makes for a lot of torque on a gate that big. B - a lot of contractors don't follow the opener spacing requirements, and it leads to mis-alignment, or dragging wood when it rains and swells, etc. It'd be good to be familiar with these requirements.

Just don't do a Blazing Saddles type gate.

Thinking about it more, I'm leaning toward a push to open swing gate. I have the space and much less work in terms of building the gate. Also like that the swing gates just have the one piston attached horizontally to the gate as opposed to a ground unit. Will save me from having to pour a housekeeping pad for that.

Planning on calling US Auto to pick their brains a little bit about the different options. I see that the have a ball style screw drive now which apparently reduces resistance on the drive.

Is there an override for the photoeye/UL rule? Otherwise I'm going to have to place these things in the front (street side) of the gate since it swings out.

Bravo to whoever convinced them that this was a good idea. Great salesman.
