We have an old unit that came with the home which was a a 2.5 ton Lennox system.

I have a Trane quote from a few months back (I believe the price will go up as they had a recent price increase)
That came out to around $10,940 for a single stage and $15,083 for a 2 stage. I think both are 16 seer.

Then got a quote for a Goodman 2.5 ton for $7000.

This is a room we hardly ever use but all of my server, and internet equipment is up there and is begininng to run a little hot now.

I considered a minisplit however we already have all the ducting run.

How do we feel about Goodman units, and around that pricepoint is there a much better brand that may be just a little more expensive?

So you have heat sensitive important equipment up there
but no people most of the time. It seems the shopping priorities are
  • Cooler
  • No comfort bells & whistles req'd
  • Less maintenance/outages that may damage equipment
  • Energy $$ concerns are less than first costs

Ergo, according to Consumer Reports repairs & satisfaction reports
  • Trane, Am.Std or equal break down less often, may also have better techs in your area
  • Buy the annual maintenance/inspections package
  • Select the cheapest system 1st cost from the best brands, no bells/whistles

Note that some really stretching a buck may
add an auto window unit set to temperature
until the Lennox dies before replacing the system.
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

We put a Goodman condenser as replacement to original equipment in our old house (at the time we did it we weren't planning to move so it wasn't a factor i our decision). It cost a fraction of what the Lenox, Trane, and other "name brand" units would have cost. We were very happy with it. Goodman provides a 10 year warranty. Locally made, too. We would do it again.

How many square feet in the room?

The reason I ask is because after having my 35+ yr old ductwork replaced my AC doesn't have to run nearly as much as it used to. My Electric bill for May was less than 900 KWH and I keep the AC at 72 (granted, it is only a 1300 Sq. Ft. house in Round Rock).

I'd rethink the mini-split if it's possible unless you know your ductwork is in great shape. I had leaking ductwork and one of my distribution boxes actually had water in it.

Then again I'm not 88agswin.. so my advice is worth less than you paid for it...

How long do plan to live there?
Is the condenser in an area that if it is really loud running it will effect you such as outside next to a patio or outside of a bedroom window ?

How many square feet is this space ?

Is it just one big room ? If so a mini split may be a good option

The room is 1104 sq ft, it truly is just one massive room.

Got a Rudd quote for $6850 so might just go that route. In another AC thread, Rudd/Rheem we're rated pretty well.

Are you in the Houston area? Even if your not I don't mind answering some questions. 832-347-0807 is my mobile and I am driving for the next 2 hours

This would seem to be a good candidate for a mini split.
