Automatic pool cover question

Our new house has a pool that is nearly complete. It has an automatic pool cover. I am looking for some help with some measurements from anyone who may have one.

The pool is rectangular and on one end the cover is rolled up in a concrete trench that is covered by coping. When you cover the pool it runs a long a track that is built into the pool wall just below the coping all around the pool

On three sides of the pool, the pool wall itself goes straight up to the coping (obviously). On the side of the pool where the cover goes however, the pool wall goes up and near the waterline it makes an angle (prob about 15 * upward, toward the decking). It ramps up until it gets to the trench that holds the cover. This ramp allows for some buffer for the water before it spills over into the trench that houses the cover.

This may not make any sense if you don't have a pool cover. But if you have one, you'll know what I'm talking about.

My question is, can anyone that has this measure a couple things for me? I'm afraid my pool may be off

I'm curious if someone could measure two dimensions for me. 1) how far below the track is it to the lowest entry point of the skimmers and two, how far below the track is it to the highest point of the ramp before water spills over the cover

I am afraid we should have several inches between these two (skimmer should be well under the water so like 6 inches below the track while the top of the ramp should be close to the ramp, like 1 inch)

If anyone has this set up and could measure that I'd greatly appreciate it

I'm a pool builder & install automatic covers from time to time. Some photos of your concerns would go a long way.

I can't rule on the skimmers without a photo, but typically the bottom of your skimmers are 6-7" below the coping.

As far as the dam wall, typically the manufacturer I use (Aquamatic) requires 2" between the bottom of the track and the top of the dam wall.

Not sure who you are using as far as manufacturer, but if you have these concerns I'd recommend looking at their details to see if they match your pool. If you don't know, Aquamatic (Model - Hydramatic) is a good source. Most covers have similar requirements.

Thanks corp ag,

I'm traveling now so can post pics later. But your info is helpful. The top of the dam wall is about 2 in below the track.

The skimmer is 6 inches below the track. So I guess it is on then.

Problem I have is the dam wall is at a slope and the bottom of the slope is 5 in below the track. So basically the water level is up to the slope and any splashing cause it to overflow easily into the cover trench. The trench is not draining well and it fills with water. This gets pretty nasty.

My neighbor has a pool with cover and his demensions are more favorable.

His skimmer is 8 in below track and his dam wall has a very minor slope. 3 in below track sloping up to 2 in below the track at the overflow point.

His trench is nice and dry

So, it only are the dimensions less favorable on mine but the bigger problem may be that the drain needs to be fixed

One question for you if you don't mind, I'd 6 in standard for all pools or os there a different standard for pools with vs without cover?

So some builders will have the skimmer opening bottom in line with the tile but I prefer to have it below the tile by an inch or two. Your skimmer opening is probably sloped down from the tile line to the mouth of the skimmer. Most skimmers are a 7.5" tall opening.

I would say that your dam wall should be more in line with his. What has your builder said? I would ask that the bottom of the dam wall tile be raised up to the center of the tile line
