Water dispenser on fridge not working after changing filter

Whirlpool fridge. It stopped making ice and the water was coming out pretty slow. I looked online and many said it was the water filter needing to be replaced. No problem, I've done it before, so I swing by Lowes for my kick in the nuts and head back to the house.

Put the new filter in...and nothing. No water comes out. I pull the filter out and try the dispenser, water flows fine from the dispenser. I put the old filter back in to see if maybe I got a bad filter, but nothing comes out. Remove old filter and water flows fine, but now water is spewing out of the housing, which hasn't happened before. Put a filter in and water stops spewing but nothing out of the dispenser.

Any ideas? I try searching online, but all I find are appliance guys who flex online by listing every possible outcome but the most probable. You know, the BIL to the automotive guy that will tell you everything from checking your voltage or ensuring the wiring is properly grounded to taking it to an ASE certified mechanic when you ask how to change the burned out blinker bulb.

Any ideas to try before having someone come out for what will be a simple fix.

Could be frozen water dispenser line. I've seen people online take a blow dryer to the door to try and thaw it. I bought a little syringe and flexible tubing setup online that I can fill with warm water and squirt into water dispenser hole. Wasn't expensive and worth 5X what I paid for it. Used it a few times. Can't recall the website though. I'm sure a Google search will find it easily.

Good luck!

I had this problem with a Samsung fridge. Tried multiple new filters and just kept getting a trickle. Eventually took it all apart and it seemed like it was the valve not getting depressed fully by the filter. They didn't sell just the part I needed, but after just manually depressing it a bunch to loosen it up I got it working. Now it's on an RO system and I plan to not touch the fridge filter again. I suspect my trying to change the filter under pressure without turning off the supply might have had something to do with it.

Good luck.

I found this thread on Reddit last night and it's the same problem I'm having with the same model fridge, and this looks to have fixed it. The filter I bought is the same one, so a new housing may be what is needed. I'll give this a shot, and if it doesn't work, I'll call a repair guy out or take the fridge somewhere and blow it up with tannerite. Haven't decided yet since I'm not sure how mad I'll be if this doesn't work.

Doubtful as the filter will only go into the housing the correct way due to the tabs needing to alight to go in.

Is the new filter OEM? some new fridges have a RFID chip in them that's not in the generic ones. If you use a generic one your fridge thinks there's no filter installed.

Yes, it's the same filter on Whirlpool's site, but I bought it at Lowe's. It works without the filter, which has me hoping it's what I found on Reddit given I have the same issues.

Just an update incase anyone has a similar issue with their water dispenser.

The filter housing came in yesterday and I put it on today, and everything is working perfectly. Ran about 4 gallons through the filter as it says to do and no issues. Wife is happy again because we'll have some ice later this afternoon.

I searched Amazon for the part number on the link in the Reddit thread, and was able to get it for $55, so not too bad and took about 15 minutes to install. Hardest part was getting the housing back over the styrofoam piece it sits on. I guess an added bonus was I got to clean behind the fridge, which hasn't happened in a couple of years, so it's nice and clean back there again.
