Leaking disposal

Just got home from a vacation and discovered a leak under kitchen sink. Sone mold and wood is discolored but not soft so probably a recent issue. Started the dishwasher to start diagnosing and during draining, disposal started leaking from bottom at reset switch and another screw. Several searches lead to internal seals which can't be repaired and require a new disposal.

Before I embark on a DIY battle with wife, how hard is a disposal to replace? I bat about 500 on DIY projects, often with followup work so I haven't earned a lot of trust. Easier to have it done, she doesn't care about cost?

Replacing a disposal is pretty easy. Power disconnect. Water line disconnect. Remove old disposal and reverse the process.

I usually cheat by buying the same brand or model so it is even simpler.

Any issues with the flange I should know about? Overtightening? We have a composite sink, does that create any issues?

Same ID problem IF an automobile water pump

I agree with Troy
BUT at batting 500 DIY yourself
and not noticing the damage due to distractions (vacations, whatever this long time span)
would 100% suggest
order disposer de jure on line THEN
call plumber to install
+ add fixit services other places to dilluste "CU" costs postponed until now

It's a mess under the kitchen sink only a young contontonist can EZ do
IMHO Senior w/o screwing up more thing under there

Drink a beer, get out some 50s bills to pay, B happy, EZ forever fix if pros do it

make sure you remove the knockout plug when reconnecting the dishwasher to the new disposal

Get a tailpiece with a dishwasher drain.

Regardless of brand most disposal mounts are the same. So there's a VERY good chance you just twist the new one onto the previously installed bracket.

I replaced a 20+ year old Kenmore 2 weeks ago. Swapped it for an Insinkerator.

Piece of cake.

Unhook the hoses, unplug it, twist to disconnect. Make sure you put something under it because when it drops you aren't catching it.

Connect the new wires, pop out the plug and twist to reconnect. The Insinkerator and Kenmore use the same quick connect so I didn't have to replace the sink parts.

It took 30 minutes start to finish and 10 of those were fighting myself to get the quick connect to line up correct.

Easiest thing ever, just twist off and on, then plug and play. I got an insinkerator evolution and it is soooo much quieter than my original. Would buy again.

Use a jack to lift the new disposal in place, it frees up a hand which makes the job much easier. A small bottle jack or even the scissor jack from a car works well.

That. Hardest part is lifting the old one and lining up the collar at the same time. Like prom night in the back seat. Might take you a sec to line it up, but you'll know when it's in there.

If you buy the same brand so it uses the same mount, it is extremely simple to replace. Definitely diy. Watch a couple YouTube videos to see what's involved. Not hard at all.

Would recommend spending a little more to upgrade to a 3/4 hp model. Will work better and quieter. Worth using some of the money you save from paying a plumber.

Since you've said you're only about 50/50 with successful DIY repairs, and since you missed the damages due to being busy with vacations and whatnot

would 100% suggest order disposer de jure on line THEN
I would definitely recommend you ordering your preferred new garbage disposal online and then

call plumber to install
Pay a plumber to do the install

+ add fixit services other places to dilluste "CU" costs postponed until now
Have the plumber fix other things you've been putting off to help dilute the overall cost of the plumber's trip

Trying to crawl and work under a sink is very difficult for older people without screwing up something else

Drink a beer, pay the plumber with 50s, and take solace with the fact that the repair will be done correctly.

I've DIY'd numerous disposal changeouts. Relatively easy fix. I paid a plumber for the last one cuz I was lazy plus changing out the kitchen faucet, which yes, I can do, and have done, but it was worth the $ to get both knocked out in 45 minutes. Plus he didn't bail, stuck around and advised on a couple other issues.

Thanks all. I ended up getting the same model as the original so I skipped the whole sink mounting parts. It was a fairly easy one beer job. I ran the dishwasher to check for leaks, another beer, and all looks good. Granted, I will be checking under the sink 20x/day for a couple of weeks but I think I'm good and wife didn't fight too much on this one.

If you don't have already, highly recommend something like this, https://a.co/d/13Zl4ht & at least a cheap little water detector like this, https://a.co/d/dNR544j

Also,, thanks for this. It was in the instructions but I could see how it could get overlooked. I didn't use to ensure the rubber gasket came off with the oil filter until it didn't and I put new filter on. Made a helluva mess.

Between two houses, mother in law, and sister in law, I'm up to about 6-7 replacements but I'm getting to the age where lying in an S curve with a sharp wooden edge pushing against your kidneys while trying to work overhead with just the right sweet spot, several 50s may be the right plan next time. Also, don't believe your mother in law when she said she didn't do anything to it. When a small glass falls down into the disposal, turning it on and crushing it is not like vegetable cuttings.

I was really lucky as the only contortioning I had to do was confirm all latches were in place on the mount. I was able to sit and do the installation.

Put a water leak detector under there. They make wifi ones. We had the seal between the granite and sink go bad and water was pooling under there, took us a while to discover. Now my house is littered with those water detectors, I get a phone notification when they go off.

@ 1 beer per leak check that is going to lead to quite a drinking problem.

Had to replace mine last night and thought about this thread.

Got the dishwasher unplugged so the auxiliary drain wouldn't leak on me. Everything was going fast. Was underneath, cleaning something. Discovered the dishwasher drain was actually the ice maker drain when it decided to flush. Yuck.

Pro-tip - power down *all* devices near by, just to be safe.

Do they not require plumbers putty to seal between the sink and the new disposal?

It's been a few years but last one I did had me go back to the store for the putty.

Yes, I believe so but I replaced with the same model so I never touched that part.
