Looking at buying a house with a pool and a definite requirement will be a safety fence around it. Anyone here with experience or recommendations on fence types, styles? I'd be interested in looking at both temporary/removable and more permanent options.

Since you may be sued for any drowning therein, even if a tresspasser, this seems to become a lawyer question pronto.

I used poolfence.com and have no regrets - very easy to set up and take down if needed and kept the kids and dog out of the pool.

catchakid fences. easy to put up and take down if you want, not too expensive, and good warranty.

Homeowners insurance may require a permanent fence

Yeah I don't know about the netting & temporary stuff. Most inspections I deal with don't allow this as an option.
Minimum fence requirements:
4' height fence minimum, self closing/self latching gates with outward swing.
No horizontal pickets (function like a ladder).
Bottom of fence must be no more than 2" off grade on soil, 4" on concrete is ok.

Some inspectors go really over the top with pool enclosure... they vary by City greatly.

I second Catchakid. They did a good job and install was quick. Also very easy to take down if needed. We had our entire patio and pool surfaces done with spray deck and it was easy to remove the fence temporarily.

We did the Catchakid net at the old house about and the net was used until our little guy was old enough. Then still put on if we were not going to be around.

I think code requirements, in addition to varying greatly by city, apply to overall access to the pool. So if your yard is fenced in, then that may meet the requirements.

If protecting your kid from drowning, then catchakid fence or net. And do swimming lessons, starting when they are infants.

My intention would be to have the yard fence locked, plus to have the pool safety fence, and our little one has been in swim lessons for almost a year, plus audible chimes on all exterior doors to notify of any doors opening.

Thanks for the recommendations and the link to the other thread.

We had high up latches on the back door and on busier days smaller kids were outfitted with the watch things that buzzed like crazy if they got wet.

The fact you are being diligent now is one of the biggest steps one can take to protect their pool from accidents.

I'm a bit torn on the high up latches. On one hand they are a great idea for keeping kids from accessing the back yard/ pool area. On the other hand they prevent kids from being able to escape the house in a fire or other emergency. I'll have to think about that some more. I also like the idea of the wrist bands.

Most likely kids can't operate the dead bolt anyways.

So.. high latch wouldn't matter.

The biggest difference the latch made was when visitors went to open the back door and could not open. It made it interocular that the door to the backyard was secured… for a reason.

You can indeed only do so much.
